During my trip back home, I suddenly felt a lost of power, driving on 7 cylinders. I was sure that it was some water inisde the head (spark plug location). It have been raining a lot for hours with my cars outside. I decided to finish the trip (few kilometers) and dry out everything once home. I know why I lost power! One of the spark plug extension overheat, burn and broke. I recovered only the small part attached to the black shroud which is partially burned too. Any idea what can be?
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

a little putty should patch that up just fine :)

I would replace all of the extenders, and potentially the wires depending on the age.

I had the same problem-2 spark plug wires shot out of the engine block and both extenders were melted/broken; I had some spares and popped them back in.

The plug extenders both melted and the plastic bonded to the base of the spark plug; I tried scraping it off but still I cannot unscrew the spark plugs because the melted plastic at the base. Did you have this problem?

We use duct tape here for something like this. lol Most likely had a pinhole in the extender and it burned through and shorted out to the block. Then it burned up. Like they all said replace them all. I got mine from Kingsborne .

Seems all they do is cause problems so I eliminated those darn things. For the price of a new set of extenders you can do the plug wire mod and do away with the extenders all together. So far its one of the best mods I've made. Just my 2cents.

I searched and found the thread on the mod for anyone interested.

    Good luck!

Man, that's the worst extender failure I've ever seen!

You can probably chip out the melted plastic but be careful with sharp objects down the plug well!!!

All, spark plug is out without problem. As usual Superformances UK has been efficient and has already sent my order and everything should be in Denmark tomorrow morning.
Will be a good oportunity for a little cleaning inside the motor bay :)

The first time I pulled my plugs, I found the extenders all had some kind of fiberious heat shields on them, a bit of investigation, I found out they are Ferrari parts, not for a 308 and not necessary.

THERE! It's proven. They do melt with water. So for all you naysayers out there, I now have evidence!

We have color coded extenders? Whats the difference? And does it matter?

Funny my 77 called for Red . They are the resistor types. I believe the OEM wires were stranded and needed a resistor to eliminate radio noise.

It's not about the color, as noted it's about resistance vs. non resistance, and it does relate to what type of wires and plugs you are using....

I just always associate the red wires/seals of later cars with the red extenders.

He's running the old style well seals in the picture......

I think the one melted in two has REALLY HIGH resistance...LOL!

I have one car with some sort of "quick clip" on the wires, nothing but static on the dial but the cassette tape is still cranking!!

    Allman Brothers.......

I don 't know the ignition voltage on the Ferrari's, but have on my fiberglass Avanti's that have the stailess steel ignition covers that bake rubber wires and destroy resistor cores, I have run for the past 30 years or so silicon jacket / stainless steel wires with non resistor plugs....and have never had a problem with radio static.

I have run into simular owners that had solid core wires and non resistor plugs that did have a static problem, and I recommended using a resistor wire between the distributor and coil which solves the problem.

Back to Ferrari, I like the mod where you just extend a silicon wire down to the plug. You'll just have to buy wires about 5 inches longer.
