I have posted a few threads here as I prepare to upgrade my audio system. I have noticed there seem to be two kinds of high end audio shops in the area. One type carries multi-driver (3 or greater) speakers + electorstatics (so think Martin Logan, B&W, Parasound, Aerial, etc.). The other type seem to carry almost exclusively two driver speakers. The think is, many of the speakers are at similar price points (4-8K). I had always assumed that more drivers (done well, of course) at a given price point were probably better, and to be honest I haven't taken the time to careful audition speakers at the the "two driver" store.

I recently read the following in an audiophile magazine: Full-range electrostatics, as well as some highly regarded two-way dynamic systems, solve the coherence problem at the expense of bottom-end extension and weight, and most limit dynamic output. The point was that lack of coherence of multi-driver system tends to muddle the sound stage and decrease the "realism" of the experience.

    Thoughts?

Any loudspeaker design has advantages and disadvantages. The design you prefer will simply make the least compromises in the areas that matter to you. Me? I love the effortless dynamics of a horn design, but can't stand the honky/shouty nature of the beast. Love the coherence of a full range electrostat (and own a pair of Soundlabs), but don't currently have the room to play them. Guess the system I've been most happy with lately has been a little pair of B&W N805 speakers mated to a nice subwoofer.

So, guess the best answer is that it isn't the number or type of drivers, but rather how they are implemented.
