Can anyone tell me if 6.5" speakers will fit on a 308? I am looking to replace the door speakers which sound horrible and are probably original. Thanks for any information! Enzone Posted from Ferrarichat.com App for Android
My 84 QV uses 6.5", and I'm fairly certain it's never been modified, but I've heard others swear that they are 5 1/4" stock even on the QV. Best way IMO is just take a door panel off and measure, not only for diameter, but so you have an idea of the front and back clearances you have to work with. A lot of door panels have been modified, too, so I think it's best to know what you're working with before purchasing new speakers.
I think they will fit. Last year, I put in new Apline speakers and it was no problem. I think they were 6.5" but then could have been 6". I did have to modify the plastic mounting panel but it is an easy task. Also search for other related threads as I am pretty sure others have already been through this as well. I think that is how I decided on the appropriate size. You can easily access the speaker to see by removing the four screws on the speaker grill. You can then remove the existing speaker and check the clearance for the speakers you plan to buy.
I have a hard time believing a 6 1/2 speaker is in a QV door that didn't get a modification. The 5 1/4 bolts right up. Of course anything is possible and as long as you do not mind trimming some metal back there, a larger one will work fine as many of you already know. But factory/stock, I am 99% sure it was always a 5 1/4 speaker opening.
the stock opening is for a 6" / a 6.5 will fit but will require modification (trimming of the hole) the first pic shows a 6" coaxial and the second shows a focal 6.5" Scott Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
+1.....a 6.5 is a tough fit I'm picking up a set of these for my QV, as Bostons were in there originally. They are shallow as well: Boston Acoustics SE Series SE65RC 200 Watts 6" 2 Way Shallow Mount Car Speakers 690283478872 | eBay
I shouldn't have said I was fairly sure, when all I have to go by for reference is my own car. This is the only picture I can find right now, shows a Pioneer 3-way 6.5" in the door. I've replaced them with Polk 6.5" 2-ways that are actually much slimmer (and sound fantastic), I'll see if I can find pictures from that with the speaker out. I'm questioning now whether it's modified, but it certainly had me fooled if it is. I still think for anyone replacing speakers, it's best to pop it open and measure first. Never know what's been going on in there, no matter what the stock size was. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I can say that in my car, the edges of the 6.5s ride up on the edge of the recess. A 6" will lay in there nicely.
Here's another thread on the speakers & size http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/308-328/377281-328-door-speakers.html?highlight=music
FYI the pioneer ts-168's are 6.25" thats why they fit. QV's and 328's all have the same size opening... Scott
Interesting, I stand corrected about the Pioneers. The Polk 6.5" speakers I put in had a nearly identical mount ring diameter and mounted right up, so I assumed the old ones were too. The way speaker sizes are marketed confuse me.
I have some Boston Pro 60se's and they are 6.5". They fit perfectly in my 1981 308 with no modification.
Just because of this thread, I turned on the old Blaupunkt Portland in my car yesterday for the first time in more than two years. It worked. I turned it off. Yes apparently my car has speakers.
If anyone was curious, and for the sake of my own sanity, I found pics of the door-sans-speaker, and of a Polk Audio DB651s Slim-Mount 6.5-Inch in it. It fits just inside the round outer bevel in the door where it's supposed to, and the door does not appear modified. Only 2 of the original screws lined up, but I felt they were adequate and didn't want to start drilling. 84 Euro QV. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
my '79 don't even mount there. It's an access hole only. Speakers are higher per photo. Notice the circular cutout holes in leather door panel. btw the speaker diameter is 6.5 Image Unavailable, Please Login
That is interesting. You have the speaker grill as usual but speakers are mounted higher. Do you know when they were put in? I supposed someone mounted them there so you could actually hear them as the power of car audio was much less in the early '80s. How deep are the speakers? I would have thought there would be clearance issues there.
AFAIK the speakers are standard depth. Funny, I just had the panel off last week as I was fixing the door jam light. Everything is back together now, prior to reading this thread. Otherwise I would have had a closer look and taken photos for show. When I took delivery of the car, it was fitted with an Alpine stereo, Fosgate amps under the seat and 6 speakers, no sub. I have since removed all the amps and now have 4 speakers. The other 2 are on the rear deck behind the seats right at my ear. They are custom made and fit neatly in each corner. I removed the ones on each side of the centre console and recovered it with leather. Looks much neater now. I really don't listen to music when I'm driving. I just press the throttle at a good note and hold it there... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Agree on the sound, nothing more needed than a clear road with a little room to run. It is good to see you have cleaned up the center console.
