Does anyone know the size of the speakers in the 550? I'd like to see if replacing the stock speakers will improve sound quality a bit. Before everyone jumps in with "the only music I need is a V12" comments, yes, I agree completely and have the receipts from the exhaust shop to prove it. I love my Tubi+custom Xpipe combination. But sometimes, just sometimes, I like a bit of music that doesn't come out sounding like a PA system. I'm too cheap and lazy to go to the trouble and expense of adding an amp, so I'm hoping that replacing the speakers will be just enough to get an acceptable sound quality. If someone's tried that and gotten poor results, please chime in. The head unit is a relatively new Pioneer DEH6050UB (4x50w max output) but I'm not averse to swapping that out if the resident car audio folks agree that it's junk. I get a very good deal on Alpine components via the distributor, so if there are any particular recommendations in their lineup, that would be even better.
The rears are 5X7. I was able to put in Polks to fit in the factory locations with a minimum of modification to the speaker. I believe the fronts were 5 inch round speakers that I put in, in the front kick panels. As far as amplification I used a Rockford Fosgate Punch PBR300X4 which fits EXACTLY under the drivers seat under the carpet hump (behind the seat in Photo 1): Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks moorfan. Did you try the speaker upgrade alone without the amp, or did it all go in together? Also, did you replace the small speakers (presumably tweeters?) on the dash?
Unfortunately Crutchfield no longer carries this compact Blaupunkt subwoofer but it may be available elsewhere. It should fit under the seat and is just powerful enough to add the right amount of bass to the stock setup. I am using one in another car and it works well. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rvN4XR6VQmQ/p_023THB200A/Blaupunkt-THb-200A.html
