I'll keep it simple... I'm doing a halloween party, there will be a pinata (I plan to build it using cardboard, etc) I want the kids to smack it around but it won't break...cause I'll make it too tough AND I'll give them a light stick... The plan is that, after they try to break it, I come out, do some crazy curse and then this happens: The pinata begins to shake violently, sparks, smoke or something start to come out of it, and then a big flash happens and the bottom falls out dropping the candy. I've got the bottom falling out figured, and even the vibration....but I'm not skilled in the use or production of sparks or flashes. I'm thinking flash paper or some kind of electronically controlled visual thing (NOT a strobe light)... Anyone have any ideas on making this happen? I'm guessing I'll need some fireworks and the ignitors used for model rockets?? Yes, I realize this is quite elaborate....but it's fun and once I put my mind to something....well...stupid things happen. Thanks!
Would it be a good idea to have fireworks/sparks flying just above the heads of little kids in hopefully fire resistant costumes? And never underestimate the power of sugar deprived children.
Steve, I gotta side with the ski bum on this one. Rather than going the pyrotechnics route, can you rig it with a release (remote control?) that only you have? When you emerge, you can do your spooky routine and use it to clear a kid-free perimeter. Then throw down one of those smoke bomb things that magicians use and hit the release button.

Steve I used to own a special effects company ( SOTA FX )... the liability on something like that is huge and its doubtful you'll find anyone who will risk it. Understand when we use any kind of pyro in the film industry there is a water truck, paramedics and firetruck sitting right outside of camera view. If you really want to pursue this ( which i suggest you dont) PM me and Ill give you some phone numbers. J
Sparklers and a few smoke bombs?? (not a real bomb, small a tiny like a cherry bomb, but release smoke)
Why not have it float into the air without cords, start to crack open with light streaming out of the middle and the ground begins to shake, ghosts come flying out of the middle of it and swirl around the kids, the the pinata explodes in a burst of blue flame with the devil appearing in the middle of the room and thousands of spiders crawl out carrying the candy, and the kids have to say an incantation to turn the spiders into gold that they can take to pawn off in order to pay for their therapy.
