I may be registering a carb 308 in the Portland area, the cats and air pumps fell off years ago. From what I can glean cars with Special Interest plates do not require DEQ, anyone have any experience with these?

The car will certainly not be a daily driver but I would like to use it once a week and am somewhat worried about arousing the suspicions of the gendarmes. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

I think you'll be fine with the SP plates. None of my cars are SP, but I see cars with them around pretty often-- even in downtown Portland.

After all, every drive is "maintenance" isn't it? At least in some sense!

Oregon's SP plates for older vehicles should be clear here:

http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/Forms/DMV/6726.pdf I know, it is a full PDF file.

The relevant passages are most likely on Page 22:

As I recall someone saying, every time I drive it, it's a parade!

Another nice thing about the Oregon SP plates is that it is a permanent plate.

It doesn't matter if you are going around the block or to the grocery store, you are allow to "exercise the vehicle". Nothing about how often. :)
