Not sure if anyone noticed that Speed is now broadcast in HD on Direct TV but two issues; first the audio kept cutting out and then it isn't in 16:9 so you have to deal with those nice bars on the side.

It wasnt an HD feed. Just SD upscaled. Not the same. FOM does send a widescreen feed to the broadcasters which SPEED then chooses to hack off the sides and make it 4x3. I have noticed the SPEED announcers discussing things on onboard views that are clearly off screen for us but not for them.

If speed was smart they would send the widescreen version to the HD channel and the 4x3 to the SD channel. It still will be upscaled from SD Widescreen (704 pixels × 480 pixels) to 720p HD (1280 × 720 pixels) but at least you wouldnt have the bars on the side.

edit this is all for F1 of course. NASCAR does broadcast in HD along with many of the SPEED shows all of which should be in full HD, not upscaled in anyway.

F1 begun HD broadcast with the Fuji race. They now have the equipment and all. Now it is up to the local networks to broadcast it in HD.
