European energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs has the idea to reduce Europe's speed limit on higways to 90km/h in order to reduce fuel consumption and, as an effect of that, generate lower fuel prices and a better enviroment.

Ferrari owners and enthousiasts, what do you think? Realistic???

Reduce the speed to cut down gas consumption and prices!!! If people buy less gas the oil companies will raise the prices even befor that just to earn as much as before!!

0,90 US$ to a gallon, when was that? a year ago 1 Gallon was 1,90 US$ in California, still half the price than the average in Europe.

BTW where is 1.32 Euros a liter? In Spain is 0.9 Euros/l for the 98 octane one.

1 year agon in Florida I paid 0,78 a gallon.
Think it's a bit more expensive now so I counted 0,90.

But heck, at 1,90 US$ it still is amazing cheap!!

It looks is not the same everywhere i n the US look California Gas Prices

Lowest price in California today is 2,33 US$ to a gallon.

Oh and the speed limit in highways is not the same either in every state, some central US states have no speed limit in highways, like Nebraska, if I bad not remember.

California Highway speed limit is 65 mph with some highways up to 70 mph. Of course that does not matter becuse all of them are a pure traffic jam all the time, so.

Only Berlusconi had the courage to increase speed limits on Italian highways from 130 to 150kmh (under certain circumstances).

Then again he doesnt have greens in his government!

I can understand they won't allow unlimited speeds but 150 or 160km/h would be a nice speed!! :)

unffortunatelly (or not) not everybody has Ferraris.

There are lots of cars that will be a real danger if they were allowed to go 150 km/h, at least in Spain, and I am sure in Italy too.

Not only that, there are even more people that over 120 km/h are just killers on wheels, because they have not the skills or the interest on driving a car. The rules are the same for everyone, that is why the administration takes always the safe route.

Although is probably true that in Germany there are less deaths by car accident than in Spain, in the other hand there is plenty more accidents and usually more dangerous ones. In percentage to the population they have less deaths than Spain (as an example), but in absolute numbers Germany gets more deaths by car accidents. So to say that allowing faster speed is less dangerous is not as simple as it might look. You can analyze the data to get whatever conclusion you want positive or negative.

If in Germany they have a better percentage accidents/deaths it is just because German has an excelent, and probaly the quickest in Europe, urgency medical assistance service. A fact is that time to receive assistance on an accident determines the result of it even more than the number of accidents. However for economic reasons most European Administrations do not want to look at the problem that way. :(

But the realtion between speed and accidents is way higher as speed increases, and not even the Germans are excluded from that reality.

Belive me is all of the sudden in Spain they decide to increase speed limits to 150 km/h (as an example) all of the sudeen instead of bunch of carrs speeding you will have tons of Vans, SUVs, and crappy old cars and drivers going at that speed, God saves us all if that happens. :D

I will just be happpier with just a little bit less police pressure in the road.

    - Julio.

I have to agree with Julio here, any crappy driver can do 160 km/h in his wonderful Mercedes A Class or Peugeot 806 Turbo****diesel. However in most cases the same crappy driver will simply fall in pieces if anything happens at that speed, not reacting the proper way and putting you in danger if you're doing the usual 160-170 km/h in your F-Car.

Anyway that is clearly not on motorways that I get my kicks, so 130 is ok (even though I rarely dip below 150 :) )

110 km/h speed limit on countryside roads, anyone ;-) ?

this isn't about ecologists. it's about western democracy - a very logical, imperceptibly slow death, whilst alive.
