I have an '82 308 and my speed sensor looks like this:

The new one looks like this:

I'm assuming this is because the old one is no longer made. But it looks like the pigtail is completely different on this so I want to make sure I have the right part.

    Thanks for any insight.

Your "new" one is the wrong one (and they are not interchangeable) -- you have/need the earlier design.

Ok thanks Steve, that's what I figured when I saw the connector. Mine is an '82 which according to the diagram had/has the new style, but it definitely does not.

I've done a search and seen questions about the new sensor wire colors.

Apparently they are Yellow and Brown instead of the original Green and Red.

One thread says the Brown wire should connect to the Green and the Yellow should connect to the Red.

Another one says the exact opposite... that the Brown wire should go to the Red and the Green wire should go to the Yellow.

    Which is it?

    Brown---Red
    Green---Yellow

    or

    Brown---Yellow
    Green--Red

    ?

1982 is the timeframe when the change occurred (and it may not have been a very "clean" change). Also, it isn't impossible to swap gearboxes. Buy the style that you need. (I don't have any personal information about the wiring).

My original one that I replaced last year looked liked that of Imatk, and I used the one as shown by Plutonium, and was indeed 'plug and play'.

The parts books are not clear on when the change was made. Its one of those situations you need to know which one to ask for or the parts guy needs to know what question to ask.

New new switch has different colors from the wires coming in the wires coming in are red and green. The new switch wires are brown and yellow so I want to know what goes with what.

It came with an appropriate one way only clip and I just clipped them together, didn’t look at the colour to pins in the clip.

I found this video useful while I was researching replacing mine:

Your question doesn't make sense. If you have the correct sensor the wiring is what it is. The terminal plug only fits on one way. So color of wires is immaterial to that.

Thanks guys I didn't know that it only fit one way. I don't have the new/old one yet so I was just trying to be proactive.

I too recently changed out my speed sensor to the new part number and swapped the terminals based on other forum posts. However, it didn’t work and I put the terminals back as received and works great. yellow to green as received with keyed connector worked for me
