2-2:30 pm Mountain Daylight time Saturday 8/11 "991 Carrera S performs as well as the 997 GT3." Really?
I went to the Porsche driving school one day course this weekend. They claimed the 991 911 s is as fast as last generations GT3 on the track at Barber. I have a 997 Carrera to compare with....I like the new model, but miss the steering feed back. It still has excellent feedback compared to any other electric steering I've driven, but doesn't give you all the info the older system does. Still a very impressive car, but I wasn't lining up to trade my 997 in. But the Cayman R...that's another story.
How could it possibly be as good as a GT3? Impossible. I don't think those SPEED test drive shows are worth much. I've never heard a bad word said about any of the cars (Lexus, Dodge, Range Rover, Subaru) as the shows are nothing more than infomercials bought and paid for by the manufacturers.
yep, they're 30 minute paid commercials. the 991 C2S is as fast or faster than the 997 GT3, but that doesn't mean it's as fun to drive, as communicative, as involving, etc. But everyone I know who has driven the 991 (including a few racing drivers) loves it.
lets at least wait till Jeremy on Top Gear has driven it - then we'll know how good it is !! Good as the 997 GT3 - well they do want to get us out of the old model - but I suspect the new GT3 will be worth the wait ....
Nice. I've heard nothing but good things about the new 991. I just bought a 997.2 and I love it... wish I had a bit more room in my budget to spring for the 991 but it was a LOT more money.
this is the 991 GT3 Cup car in testing. giggity. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuxKC_Ccai8[/ame]
While I've never owned a 997, I do know that my 991cs is much better driving, has more communicative-involved handling, more fun to drive, superior build quality-material, better fit/finish and faster than my old 993. If I run over a penny, I tell if its heads or tails. All superlatives aside, the 991cs is simply the best Porsche 911 ever made...so far.
My 997 C4S certainly had a more raw feeling....the new car lacks this...some love it, some hate it.......but in every single other possible way, the 991S is a much better car IMO. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have been a huge 911 fan for years. In fact I still have my 1997 993 TT S! This is one of my favorite cars ever! Not as fun to drive as my 430 spider.... but it's almost 10 years older! I had a 997 and it was fine. I still am not a huge fan of the liquid cooled cars. The 997 was almost like driving a Mercedes.... Except the seats were rock hard and very uncomfortable (unlike the Mercedes). I got rid of it and decided to drive my 430 more (excellent choice). Fast forward a few months and one of my buddies picks up a 991 Carrera S.... It looked great; and then I went for a ride! The car is amazing and the seats are much better than the 997! I would honestly consider getting one! Only thing is- the car is a 2 door Panamera. I guess I'm old fashioned and I like my 911 as a bare bones racing car.
Each new 911, including the 991, are much nicer-plusher cars than each preceding 911. But, the 911 has never really been a bare-bone sports car like a Cobra or other street legal race cars. It has had a/c, radio, adjustable seats, leather, power windows, power brakes and other such luxury accouterments for a very long time.
The front end treatment in the first pic is great. The second pic makes the car appear very, very looooong. It doesn't look nimble at all from that angle. I hate the rear wing configuration -- surely they will go with a more aggressive wing when released. No doubt it will look better in the flesh & slay previous GT3's but those pics don't raise my blood pressure. I wonder what it will cost.
I agree 100% with this statement which is the reason my 997S spent 11 months in pieces, I wanted the car but not all the stuff that came with it. It was not the smartest thing I ever did but after almost 5 years of driving I still love everything about the car. The 991 is a fantastic car but for me at least it has more of a sealed in a tomb feeling than I would want in a 911, reminds me of a DB9 or a CL series not that that is a bad thing at all.
Top Gear is hardly a reliable source for information--unless you are merely interested in lurid power slides and reports that bash any car that isn't British.
I think raw is relative. My brother's 997 is a great car, but it's Lexus-like in comparison to my ex-993. I'm sure the 991 is a great drive, and look forward to having a go in one (haven't yet).
I just drove a base 991 and 991 S back to back at PNW's newest race track (Ridge Motorsport Park). Based on 991 reviews I've read i.e. more GT than sporty, electric steering, too quiet, etc., I expected to not like the car. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. The car still had plenty of feel as you get closer to the limit. The PDK was better than I can shift; in Sport Plus mode, I still had to think about the optimum time to shift. This attribute actually made the car more involving to drive than I thought. Left foot braking is more of a possibility. Turn-in is sharper than I expected. I also enjoyed the engine noise especially in Sport Plus mode. If I can only have one car, the only choice for me remains to be the 911. Having said this, I've always believed in my ideal car trinity (a daily driver, a nice-weather fun car, and a proper race car) and three bespoke cars will always do a better job than an all-in-one. Admittedly, the 991 has raised the bar. If this model proves to be reliable and I don't need 4 adult sized seats, I can see myself owning a base with minimal options as a daily driver.
i have a 991 s-cab. my only complaint is the exhaust is too quiet. after driving a 430 for a few years, the 991 exhaust seems wimpy by comparison. i just had the tubi aftermarket exhaust installed on my 991 and i am now VERY HAPPY!!
no, i did not order the sport exhaust. my brother in law has the sport exhast on his 991 and i thought it was not loud enough. there is no way to post a video on f-chat. however, champion motorsports has a video of a prototype tubi installed on a 991. see the link below. i believe mine was the first retail install of this tubi. i did the install around 6 weeks ago. the 991 stock exhaust is valved, analogous to the ferrari system. unlike the ferrari, the valves on the 991 do not open at a predetermined rpm. on my new tubi exhaust, the 991 is quiet on idle and slow acceleration. on hard acceleration the valves open and the exhaust becomes wonderfully loud, but not overbearing. check out this link for the vido: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/991/275379-teaser-tubi-style-991-exhaust.html
Thanks for the link.....that tubi sounds pretty good.....I have PSE on mine and like it quite a bit.....but like you, I prefer the note on my 430
