I need some help from the guys who know Macs really well. I use my 2 1/2 year old iBook to pull pictures off my camera when I am not home near my iMac but it is getting really slow when I am transferring a few hundred RAW files. Is there anyway to speed it up without getting more RAM, its getting replaced this spring but I have a couple trips before then. Thanks guys.

I added RAM to my IMac a few months ago. Cost me $75, took all of 4 minutes and was like getting a new computer.

Since memory is fairly cheap now, a simple RAM upgrade would be the obvious choice. I upgraded my MBP Core Duo just a couple weeks ago.

+1 on the memory. Should be available really cheap for that nowadays.

However, how long has it been since you "cleaned" the disk? RAW files are big - That combined with a badly "fragmented" drive will slow stuff down. If the above is all you're doing with it, and you don't have a third party "diagnostic" disk it may be worthwhile to back it up, format the sucker and re-install. Doesn't take too long, and you'll have a "new" machine that will *amaze* you with how fast it goes......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Thanks for the advice. I ended up wiping the drive this morning and it does seem a lot faster. I looked into ram and the most I can put in is a 1GB stick which is around $50-60, money is pretty tight now and for a 2nd computer that is getting replaced by a MBP in a couple months it just isn't worth.
