Can anyone confirm to me that the speedo cable takes the route of the centre tunnel on the 246? I am getting on with the rebuild but this is one item that so far has me a little unsure as i dont seem to have a photo of it coming out and having looked at Omgjons thread thats where it appears to run.

Graham - I believe that the route differs in early and late cars. In my three cars all of 1972 vintage the speedo cable runs from the speedometer, towards the left front wheel well, down the rear aspect of the left front wheel well (behind the splash guard), under the left side door (through the rocker panel), emerging under the left fuel tank, along the left structural chassis member, under the starter, to the sending unit (drive gear) on the upper right side of the transmission.

    Jim has it,
Look at omgjon's web site, Back Together sequence, #191 and many more. Start at engine drive end, across under starter, under transfer case, under left gas tank, under left door, up along tub, through tub and to speedo. Hard to see but in many of the pitures.

    Graham,
attached are photos of the speedo cable route on my late right hand drive 73 GT.
the cable runs through the right oval chassis tube.
at the rear, it clips to the inside of the fibre glass detachable inner wheel sheild.
I note that there is a nylon riveted clip at same location on the left wheel sheild, perhaps there for left hand drive cars.
I replaced the cable a year ago after the speedo needle started to wobble.
The inner cable had started to disintegrate about 10" from the instrument. This is where the cabe bends more tightly to go down the front wheel arch. Worth taking time to get this part nice and smooth. I used nylon ties to the the other cabling in the fromt arch to keep it in place.

Thanks All, And firstly Hi to Kevin who has come from nowhere with an excellent first post!. I looked at that route on my car Kevin but the front end of the oval chassis tube is welded up on my car and i cant remember if it was open before it went away to be restored or not.
However i dont think it ever ran through the chassis albeit a good idea.
I suspect Jim is correct whereby his runs through the rocker (or sill as we call it over here) i just hope that its long enough to do this.
PS, Kevin what part of the world are you in and can you post some photos of your car as we are a nosey lot on here!

    Graham,
the car was in very good condition, with two previous owners, the last for 20+yrs, and a full documented history.
I have stripped both front and rear suspension, cleanend the chassis back to bare metal and then rebuilt.
I stripped all 4 inner wheel arches back to bare metal, and painstakingly removed all rust using a dimond burr and acid.
Also stripped, repaired and rebuilt the inners of the passenger door and window/qtr light assembly.
Apart from that its original and unmolested.
Started the 6000mile valve timing shim check this week end, and took the opportunity to strip/clean and rebulid the distributor.
bit of a diagression from your speedo cable question, however, its an introduction.

Quick question, is it possible to completely replace the complete Speedo cable without stripping the car? I have the dashboard out at the moment, and the engine/tanks are out too. Bought a new speedometer cable from Superformance but am not sure about how to replace it without further stripping the car. Could i just tape/heat shrink tube it to the existing cable and then gently pull it through?

    Cheers,
    Adrian

Adrian, it is few years ago since I did replace the speedo cable, but from memory it was very straight forward once the rear an front wheel were off along with the inner fibre glass protection panels and interment panel unscrewed and tilted outwards. I think I tied string to the old cable an then pulled it out leaving the string in there to pull the new through. I don't remember any fiddly bits. Go for it.
