Hi! I've been lurking around for quite some time since owning my '98 F355 that I purchased this summer. The car has been flawless until now and a great joy to drive.

When driving it yesterday however the speedo stopped working all of a sudden. Before bringing it in to the dealership and spending big $$$ I thought it would be a good idea asking you lot for advice. Is there any contact I could check for corrosion? Does anybody know where the speedo sensor is hooked? I guess it should be near the gearbox? I suspect it might just need a good cleaning job to work again.

    Thanks for all your help
    Chris

Welcome to F-chat and to F-car ownership.

I also have a 355 (spider). The attached thread talks about the lighting behind the dash - but the same process for part one - to check the connection behind the dash. There is also a connection on the front wheel arm that send the signal to the speedo. I think there is a post out there on where specifically it is located - I do not have my book with me to look it up currently. But do a quick search on 355 speedo...

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Rich! I will check that.

And it's a bit embarassing for me to do the first post without searching the archives first. I'm obviously not the only one with the problem...

I found the post about the position of the speed sensor, but it seems you have to take the wheel and the inner arch off to access it... well, I guess it's a dealer job then. I was born with two left hands...

Chris - not a problem - we are hear to help. I would check the dash connection - which is easy - I would not be surprised if the connection there might be a little loose. And then if that is ok - I am with you on this - the dealer or independent may be the best to work on the sensor in the front of the car...

    Best of luck!

Mine just went. it was the speed sensor on the gearbox. You know this if your suspension warning light comes on as well.

    Chris,

The transmitter that sends a signal to the speedometer is on the lower lefthand side of the gearbox (#34 in drawing), bit of a fiddle to change - takes about half an hour.

Any idea which connection it is behind the dash? My speedo goes off occasionally (cluster works, but odo & speedo stop) but I don't get the suspension light etc, so I assume the sender on the gearbox end is working correctly?

    Many thanks

    Bri

Once you take the Pod off you can pretty eaisly deduce which one it is by line of sight. I am trying to remember but I think if you look just behind the pod where the speedo is there are 3 connectors in the General Area (but It has been about 1.5 years since I have had mine off to fix one of the bulbs. I believe it is the one which is just above where the center of the speedo is - and looks like a old 9 pin printer type connection (the round type).

I don't have the tech manual with me here on the road - but if you can have someone - or if you have one - it maps the whole dash out for you... If you don't have it - just take a look - I think you will narrow it down - and just unplug and replug back in to ensure the connection is clean and firm.
