I noticed the 180mph speedo has a red mark at around 31mph? See photo. Anybody know the purpose of this mark? Joe Image Unavailable, Please Login
Most older european cars have a mark on the speedometer where you are supposed to shift out of first gear. I've owned Fiats, BMWs, Volkswagens, etc. and all have those red lines at different places because of gearing, but all have corresponded to just below redline in first gear in that car.
I read somewhere years ago that was the maximum speed...in reverse! Many older Italian cars have that mark.
The meaning of the red mark comes up every few years. We discussed it 5 years ago here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/278091.html Right after I purchased my car, I asked the chief tech at Classic Coach: "What kind of mark is that?" "Red," he replied.
