Hello fellow Ferrari chatters. About three weeks ago my speedometer failed on my 1981 308 GTSi, so I did some research on the Ferrari chat forum and found some very good threads on the subject and have narrowed down my problem to the speedometer sensing unit. I ordered a new replacement part from T. Rutlands which showed they had some available so I ordered one for around $245. After being on the road a few weeks when I came home it hadn't arrived yet so I called them up and they said that they didn't have them in stock anymore so I ordered one from Eurospares for about the same price. Well, today I got an e-mail saying they don't have them anymore either. The original part number was 106324 but has been superseded by part #124146. My question is does anyone know where I can find this replacement part without spending an arm and a leg? I've attached the original pic of the sending unit and the second one is the replacement one. Thanks for your help.

Also Superformance in the UK. Be advised the wires on the new senders can be reversed in the connector. For my 82, my new sender wires were reversed as to what they should be for the sender to work. Sender brown wire is the 12V in and should mate to car harness green....sender yellow wire is the signal and mates to car harness red/black.

    Best Regards,

Just did mine... T. Rutlands for $225 (eBay Store) and the wires needed to be reversed. Easy fix once you have the part in hand. Good luck!

Those speedo senders have helped keep so many low milage vehicles available.

Thanks BigTex I tried FerrariParts on AWITALIAN web site and they still show they have them for sale but today strike 3. I got an e-mail this morning from Stacey over there that they no longer carry it, apparently no one seems to be making them anymore. Onto Super performance hope they sell it. The hunt continues.

Hi guys I know it's been a while to get back to this post and let know what has happened in getting this speedo sensing unit. Ok here's the low down Italian Car Parts has the part on their web site as FR106324 (which is the original stand-up style which I have) listed for $299.95+SH(est $23.50) but they don't have it in stock on back order now for a long time. T. Rutlands shows they still have it too for $249.95 but when I ordered it got e-mail the next day saying they don't have it in stock anymore, on back order. Autoricambi d' Epoca doesn't have it either but if they did it would be 215 Euros +SH. Eurospares has it listed on their site for 175 Pounds about $175 + SH and Super Performance has it on their site for 145 Pounds plus VAT and SH all for around $282 but they also don't have them on back order for a long time. So I called Ferrari of Denver to see what they could do and they don't have any in stock in entire US inventory so they e-mailed Ferrari and turns out they don't make the part anymore. I started looking at salvage 2v 308's and no luck and I finally found Denis McCain and called them and they said they have some in stock for $342.95 so I ordered it and waiting for it come. In the mean time I decided to change my gear oil with Red Line 75W-90. So 2V 308's and earlier if your speedo sensor fails I'd start with Denis Mc Cain sounds like this is going to be a hard part to get a hold of in the future. Thanks for your in put guys.

Since WAY back in the 80's...

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER believe the indicated milage on a 308. NEVER.

This is rule number 2 of the 308 rules.

I know it is a lot but you may want to think about buying two since they are so difficult to find. You can ALWAYS sell it later.

Are all the sending units the same on the 2V injected cars?

    +1 on watching the wires.

I ordered one from superformance last year, it didnt work so assumed speedo was faulty after checking everything else.

Stripped out the dash (dont ask!!), sent the new and old sensor and speedo all the way from UK to palo alto in california to be told the new unit was OK butnthe wires were the wrong way round in the plug !

So about £ 100 down and god knows how many hours later i felt a total idiot for not comparing the wiring between the old and new sensors !

Thanks Dr Tommy and fitchy. When this thing shows up I'll make sure I get it in right and if all is OK I'll order another one, knowing these units have such a short shelf life. I'm not 100% sure if there all the same on the 2V's or not. My research shows that on some later 2V they switched to the one on the QV's but can't confirm that. I'm trying to keep this 308 as original as possible at 36k and some change now. I know when I bought it just over 5 years ago it showed 29K with all records from when new and all work done on it with milage on all paper work showing its history looked logical with milage on it through the years but you just never really know if it's all legitimate or not but while I have it will. You guys are the best thanks again.

My sending unit failed twice. Once (as far as I know, once) before I owned it based on the service records and one time with me back in 1998. I guessed I drove about 1500-2000 miles before I fixed mine. It was summer and I was making a lot of out of town trips so it was relatively easy to guess at the time. It was so long ago I just don't remember if it was the 1500 or 2000. I have it written down somewhere. I have no idea how long it went without it working the first time.

Anyway, I have almost 108,000 miles showing. That is really 110,000 but who really knows because of that first sending unit.

This is a part that will fail 100% of the time on all of these cars without ANY exception, given enough time. I have lots of stories...

So indicated milage should always be taken as an estimate only in every case when buying one of these cars.

I found out the hard way that the wires are crossed in these new units and needed to be swapped in order to work. Seems like a common theme based on people's postings in this thread. I only wished I knew at the time!

I may have been lucky as I replaced mine last summer and got it from the dealer (FMoV). Paid big $$$, but at least it arrived within days of ordering.

    Hi all,

I also have a speedo problem on my UK spec 1987 Mondial 3.2 coupe.

The problem is that it does not show the correct road speed. For example I may be doing 60mph and it only show 25mph (who knows?).

The milometer works fine, counting the miles as I drive but thats a separate unit on these cars anyway.

The question is whether its my speed or he speedo sensor thats faulty. I am not sure the symptoms between the 2 and how to determine which is at fault but as mentioned above it works every time but just shows the wrong speed.

    Many thanks.

If the odometer still works it is not the sensor. If both inop then probably the sensor.

    Thanks John

Would you know that If it's the Speedo unit that's faulty is there something I can do to fix it? Maybe take it apart and see if I find anything wrong, what to look for?

My rev counter has a similar issue whereas it shows lower revs than it should as well

    Thanks very much.

Hi guys, the part came today and here is the pic out of the box and the one installed in the car. My original one was the one at the top of this post on the left but the newer one is easier to install. Drove car on a test drive to make sure it worked and all is well so sealed the connectors and reassembled car and back to normal now. I did change the gear oil and put in the red line brand and oh my does that make a huge difference in shifting when it is cold, which I would have done that sooner. Back to driving later this week!

Hi there fellow Ferrarista. You need to contact Superperformance in the United Kingdom. There website is detailed and the speedo sensor is easy to find. If I remember correctly I paid in the region of 89 GDP which equates to about 150 USD . It was posted to me in South Africa and took about 10 days to arrive. There was a small fee to pay on collection from the Post Office. It also came in a genuine Ferrari package. I do suggest however that you ensure that your speedometer is working 100%. Get it checked by a qualified auto electrician before you purchase the sensor. I experienced a double fault ( speedo and sensor faulty). Good luck Mike Dewar ( South Africa) 1982 FerrARI 308 GTSI
