I've been thinking that my speedometer (2001 360, had it for about 6 weeks) has been reading high, so today I went out with a GPS and confirmed it (speedometer 80, GPS 72. Speedometer 70, GPS 63-64. Speedometer 60, GPS 55).

Anybody else have a problem with their speedometer and/or a guess as to what is going on?

Yep... my year 2000 360 has the same issue and almost exactly the same apparent-to-actual speed deltas. Since my car has 19" wheels, I just figured this was the issue and decided not to pay for a speedometer calibration.

Are you running stock or larger wheels?

I presume stock tires. Pirelli 275/40 ZR 18 99Y on the back.

I think most car manufacturers have their speedometers read "optimistic" (higher speed than actual). they may not want to be responsible for people speeding and them claim their speedo said they were at the speed limit. It also makes you think you are getting better mileage (mpg) than you really are. Sneaky.

I also think that an optimistic speedometer makes your warranty run out faster and saves the manufacturer potentially alot of money. they propably don't want to err on giving to much warrany side.

Warranties should be based on hours of operation not miles in my opinion anyway. A car sitting at idle for hours (like many police cars) is worse than driving it.

If your speedo is within 3%, that's normal. Thats 1.8 mph at 60. 10% which is not unusual should be fixed, particularly if your car is still under warranty. You are getting 10% less warranty on mileage. Do the math.
