From "Grammar Monster" http://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/lapost.htm 3. Mistakes with apostrophes are very common. One reason for this is the number of exceptions to the rules above. For example, plural words which do not end in the letter "s" (e.g. "men", "people" and "children") have the apostrophe before the "s" when showing possession. Examples: He is the people's poet. [checkmark picture] I think I win, Mr. McCoy. Either you were using bad grammar or being redundant. What do you have to say to that?!
"Enzo Ferrari," "men," "people" and "children," being human at one time or another, are, or were (in the instance they've gone to the great pendant in the sky) capable of possessing, hence "possessive apostrophe" which, in bastardized form is known as "greengrocer’s apostrophe."
"Don't you know the Queen's English?" "Well of course she is." Spell Czech: чех? до сведенни? до свидання товарищ! Me two!!!
"It's sort of my own little signature." The comman between "own" and "little" is superfluous. It's a dangerous, ugly, worrysome little can of worms you're opening here Carbon. DM
Good for you for taking this on, Carbon. The apostrophe misuse drives me nuts as well, as does the 'of' vs. 'have'...as in, 'he must of been doing 150' instead of the proper 'he must have been doing 150'. Fight the good fight!! Neil
Okay, boys and girls, today we'll continue with discussions of the apostrophe. Apostrophes are also used in contractions. A contraction is one word formed from two. For example, "don't" is a contraction of "do not"; "isn't" is a contraction of "is not"; "couldn't've" is a contraction of "could not have" (but let's just stick to the basics ). When using a contraction, you must use the apostrophe that accompanies it. The apostrophe is not optional! So, to reiterate, "dont", "isnt", "cant", "wont", "wouldnt" are all incorrect contractions because they are missing an apostrophe. Please! Think of the apostrophes. More later...
don't forget "y'all" Carbon, you might want to chime in on this thread... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88682
Sarge, years ago, Rob turned the spell-check feature on, but then decided to turn it off. Too many people complained about all the red words in every post. Steve, no, please don't...! If we get into British English or olde English, i just might seize...!
