Enzo experimented with a 27 litre V12 to try and get one of those fat, heavy FEOHOS to move

If you compare models to models its very close.
I've read articles were pilots whom flew both said similar things ie
Mustang had range longe range escort aircraft
Spitfire had a better climb rate
    speed of both similar
    Dive Mustang better
    Spitfire better turning circle
    Roll rate Spitfire
    In a dogfight the Spitfire.
All comes back to personel taste.

I love both but there's something about the P-51D that makes it one of m favourite aircraft of all time.

Absolutely! Two of the best, no doubt.

Yes, I think the P-51D is a seriously beautiful aircraft, which doesn't hurt its overall appeal.

A friend's dad regularly flies the RAAF museum P-51 and has also flown a spitfire, and from memory he prefers the Mustang.
