Or in the "it's not even slightly funny" thread. Back to Spitfires - a really interesting biography is that of a Canadian, Beverly Shenstone, who was the Aerodynamicist behind the Spitfire - Mitchell was the overall project/concept leader, but others did the hard yards....
Important point - "equal to" and "identical to" have different meanings. Because the best Spitfire is equal, but not identical to, its contemporary Mustang, I mean.
Lots of women of my age and education are intellectually superior to me, and I'm pretty sure it's not because I'm dumb
Of course. You're missing my point. There are smarter and stronger people than all of us. I'd be surprised if anyone on here is the most intellectual or strongest person in the world....so there's always someone somewhere else. There are women who are smarter and stronger than me......but that doesn't mean that all women are smarter or stronger. Whilst I've certainly met women who are smarter, I even have one as a partner, I've never met one who is stronger, even though I know they exist. I've met many men who are stronger though. Let's take Karen, for example. She's a pretty normal sort of woman. She's not too bright and she's not too strong, but she tries hard to fit in, and that's all we can really ask of her. Women like to think they're our equal.....good for them! Some of them are! Some are superior. On the whole, there's a reason why women have to fight for equality. And whilst some might argue that women are the intellectual equal of men, I'd be surprised if many would claim that they're the physical equal. However, things are either equal or they're not....you can't have it both ways. Of course some of what I'm writing might be complete BS and not my point of view at all.
These are the silhouettes we make. The top one is a Mk Xii of Tony Gaze aircraft code. Tony was an Australian squadron leader and was the guy who started the racing at Goodwood. Went on to drive Astons and Ferrari and partnered with one Stan Jones (Alan Jones's dad) for a couple of Rallies. That aeroplane is undergoing restoration in Australia I believe. The others are MkV Spit and a P51 of course, and there is a P40 Kittyhawk. We are working on an Me109, and a Fw190. The silhouettes are from 2mm ally, 1200mm long, and people paint or stencil them up to the squadron markings of their relatives that flew them or in this example of my mate Steve's P51, that fly's at airshows. And you I don't think understood my first post on this subject, or maybe you really did ... heck I don't know Pete, do you have a daughter? Have you watched her go from a trouble free person enjoying life to the on set of her periods and realising that her life from that day until menopause stops stuffing with her will be different and severly restricted compared to her brother. Have you watched her develop the realisation that people look at her differently than her brother and once she reaches a certain age what she says and does is insignificant compared to watch she looks like. Damn right women have to fight for equality because mother nature stuffed their chances from the start. Try and imagine what you would be like if ~25% of your life was affected by the period and what you wanted to do was restricted by what you can do without embarrassing youself with a "leak" at the wrong moment. My post on this subject was in response to the rape comments during WW2 (unbelieveably sad and pathetic action by those men) by Ian. I tried to put myself in women's shoes for a few minutes and the result simply scared and saddened me. I suggest you give it a go ... Women need all the love, respect and support they can get from us mere males. I say mere because we really do have it simple and it is wrong of us to enjoy this unfair advantage without giving the other 50% of the human population a hand. We wouldn't be here without them! ... but nope we have a huge % of males on this planet that go out of their way to make it considerably harder for them. The rest of us males IMO have the responsibility of teaching those other men, so their sons will do the right thing! Plus the impacts of the period IMO should be taught as part of sex education to males so they learn empathy instead of the "damn I can't have sex for a few days" attitude. I don't recall it even been mentioned when I was at school. Heck I've tried to explain to my son why his mum is sometimes cranky so he is prepared for his future relationships ... BTW: Spitfires were delivered to the battle airfields by women pilots, but I assume most here knew that. Pete
As were the heavy bombers. Also the russians had women front line fighter and bomber pilots, who were very successful.
lol...pardon? A few. I would be very surprised if any of my daughters have given it as much thought as you have. I could ask, but I'm pretty sure they just see it as normal. well, apart from tempting us to make babies with them, what else are they here for? Who cares what they say? The less they say, the better, actually. What are they doing out of the kitchen or laundry anyway? Good...so you agree with me. Women are not the equal of men. I understand that....and it's a disgrace. But I would be just as horrified by a man being raped or bashed too. Violence is not acceptable ever. A guy was bashed and killed by two thugs at the end of Toorak Rd a few days ago. I feel as bad for him and as angry against the perps as I did when Jill Meagher was murdered. I don't differentiate between men and women there. We should all love and respect each other, regardless of sex. We all need Greek girlfriends
No, because it's obvious and correct. You're completely missing the point - nobody is saying "women are the same as men in every way" - if they were, we wouldn't have two different words and human biology lessons would be pretty different than now. Senna was the equal of Prost. But they weren't the same. 6*8 equals 160/4+2^3. But they're not the same, there on the page. etc etc etc
That's a whole other thread Pete!! I suggested to my wife one day, when we were in Japan, that maybe she should take on the philosophy of the locals, a when in Rome thing. That Japanese women traditionally, approach their husbands as if they approach heaven itself! I got the "Look" and I'm sure I saw a tumble weed roll by. Now Back to The Spits and 51's.
But, I thought men were from Mars?! No Cookies | The Advertiser Oh no. Now I've also gone off topic. Maybe they should be sent in a fleet of Spitfires?
Indeed This arrived in the mail today: Haynes Supermarine Spitfire Restoration Manual Feature Looks like a good read
Gives new meaning to the term "Rebuilt from a Tacho needle" : Businessman who spent £1m restoring Spitfire he found in a scrapyard 10 years ago sees it fly again | Daily Mail Online
Just another replica really. It would be a crying shame to restore a very original WW2 plane to airworthy status IMHO. Very little of the original aircraft would remain. The only remaining totally unrestored ME 109 in the world lives in the Canberra War Museum. It is original right down to the paint and it is an awesome thing to behold.
I don't agree in this case. It sounds like he found a fuselage and then sourced parts from all over the world to complete the aircraft. I would personally rather see (and hear) this wonderful result than just another rotting fuselage. There are plenty of non-flying static display aircraft in the world. I was curious to see what MK they would claim the result is (apparently a MK IX). Would be interested to hear how they came to that conclusion.
