Later this afternoon more than 200 veterans will board a cruise ship in Portsmouth to make it to Normandy in time for the big day on Thursday.

They will be escorted by five Navy vessels and 18 gunboats as they make the poignant journey to Caen.

Today's group will join 300 D-Day survivors who left from Dover on a British Legion cruise ship named Boudicca yesterday.

Representatives from other allied countries, including Germany, are expected to attend Wednesday's event at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial involving 4,000 military personnel, 11 Royal Naval vessels and 26 RAF aircraft.

Spitfire NH34, as seen in the foreground, flew with 411 (Grizzly Bear) squadron RCAF in the weeks after D-Day. The most notable of its nine pilots was Flt Lt Hugh Charles Trainor who gained his third kill in 48 hours on June 29, 1944 when he downed an ME109 five miles West of Caen whilst flying the aircraft

NH341 was shot down on July 2, 1944 over Caen. After years on display, her fuselage arrived at Historic Flying Ltd, based at The Imperial War Museum Duxford in July 2015, where she was fully restored

All two-seat conversions of mark IXs. I believe a few others have been converted similarly.
