I got back from being out to sea about a week ago and replaced the exhaust with Hyper-Flow test pipes from Ricambi. When I got the old pre-cats off, the one that had caught fire had a bunch of honeycomb shaped chunks and a couple pieces of melted slag in it. I put the new exhaust on it, but there are some leaks. I don't exactly understand the spring concept that is used for the connection. Is there any easy way to fix this, or should I take it to an exhaust shop and ask them to fix it for me?

Also, I replaced the spark plugs with the OEM Champions as recommended by somebody here and my car didn't start. I put the old dirty plugs back in and it started and ran alright. I think I'm going to get Iridium replacements like the ones that are in it now. Is there any real difference between the Denso and NGK Iridium plugs? I've got the NGK in it now, but with the Dense being $4 more a piece it seems like there may be something I'm missing.

Thanks again for everybody's help in getting me to this point.

My hyperflows werent bent 100% perfect. I had to take a pry bar and hold tension on the precat while tightening to keep the dognut even in the cup all the way around. It may take a second person to help. I loosly installed the entire system and then evenly tightened it so each dognut was evenly seated in each cup.

That sounds like just a little bit of a pain in the ass. Kinda sounds fun, though. Thanks.

    Dear Ferraristi,

I don't understand why your car wouldn't start with the OEM plug....it's what I use. Even if they weren't gapped....you did gap them right?....it should still start.

When putting the exhaust back, put everything together loosely, then tighten everything bit by bit....everything should seat unless some part is way out of proper shape.

If you ever end up on Oahu, Hawaii for business or whatever, hit me up. I've got some friends you may want to meet.

I think I gapped them right. I set them to exactly what the Iridium ones that were in were set to. .020 I think. I'd have to check, though. If that doesn't sound right, please let me know. Either way, I just ordered a new set of the NGK Iridium plugs.

As for the exhaust, I loosened it all up a little and started tightening them all more like tightening up a pressure assembly. It's a bit better now, but it'll still take some more finesse.

    Thank you.

....you are talking about women right?! :D

    The gap should be .24" - .28" or 0.6mm - 0.7mm according to the owner's manual page 71 1991 US Version

Yes, I'm talking about women. A lot of my friends are strippers.

Thanks for the gap info. I suppose I should have checked the manual instead of what the old ones were set to.

    Enjoy.

Hey Gary, good to hear from you.
The car's been running all right, as far as I can tell. UPS screwed up the shipment of my spark plugs, so I'm not exactly sure when I'm going to get them. They got sent to the wrong island. After changing out the pre-cats the car is running a lot better, but there's still a noticeable putter on the right side, which I think is from the spark plugs, but until I replace them I can't be sure.
I still haven't found a good Ferrari mechanic on the island and don't really feel like connecting the O2 sensors and "see what happens" like the last guy told me to. And I'm not exactly sure how to handle the exhaust temp sensing thing not being connected.
As far as the pre-cats go, they're not leaking anymore. It took a bit of time, but I finally loosened and tightened all the joints until they all made a good seal.
I'll be leaving on deployment sometime around my dad's birthday, so I think I'll send my car back home and have Carlo do a major service and check out the exhaust setup.
    Thanks,
    -Olin

I'm glad to hear it's doing better!

Hopefully those new plugs will bring it back to 100%+.

Sometimes engine heat can affect the ignition wires over time. They get micro-cracks in the insulation with possible shorting to case grounding which can make symptoms difficult to trace, appear non-repeatable or masked as other issues (like poor spark plug firing). One way to easily see spark plug wire leakage is in the dark at night time with the engine running and the bonnet up; look for electrical discharges from the wires to any metal nearby (block, heads, mounts, supports, studs, etc).
    Just a thought
