    under the aluminum shift gate on my 348, there is an old dry grey sponge... I guess it purpose is to prevent things to fall in to the mechanisme.

    Is this a stock item?
    how should it look, Pics?

    so the early cars have a sponge, and the the late a rubber boot?

    Mine had a big chunk of couch cushion foam in it... I assume it was to supress noise and perhaps vibration from the shifter mech.
    I took it out, loaded the assembly with white grease, and added the rubber boot from Ricambi, as as shown above.

    Replaced the sponge with the rubber boot, 3 years ago. No problems, looks 1000 times better.

    Honestly, the SS is not sponge-worthy. Use a rubber instead. :)

    If there's no sponge or rubber, I suppose abstinence is best until you get one of those in place.

    It has always been there in the gated shifters....my early 308GTBs have it also.....
