What are some of your winter storage tips for the high country. It looks up where I am at 9500 ft. in Breckenridge it will be at least 5 months of no driving. I know about increasing tire pressure, and using a battery tender. The garage is very well insultated and heated but I usually dont turn on the heat. The garage is never colder than 45 and is often 50- 60 degrees. Do you guys turn the car on every so often to let the engine get to operating temps?? I have also heard of moving the car a few feet back and forth in the garage so the tires dont get flat spots. Or is long term storage so bad for a sports car that its worth putting a car in a commerical garage in Denver and driving it a few times a month on the road??? Thanks for your thoughts.... SS

Since no matter where you stop the engine a set of valves will always be open it never hurts to fog the engine when you are going to park it for more than 4 or 5 weeks. Condensation can build up in cylinders which are open due to sweating and then rust can form on the rings and cylinder walls, thus reducing compression, etc. I also always put in a can of Stabil in the gas and fill up the tank completely when I store mine for the winter. As for fogging oil, I usually use 2 stroke amsoil or other quality two stroke oil to coat the cylinders and rings. If you are going to start the car and let it run 20+ minutes every few weeks, then never mind the fogging comment. Just remember the old saying, Italian cars that sit, usually collect problems..

This is good advice. If you're staying at this home full time I would heat cycle the car every few weeks.

If you can keep the temperature a little warmer, then you won't have to worry about the tires getting a flat spot but it's always a good idea to start the car up and move it around. We store exotic and classic cars for people in the mountains so they can drive them 9 months of the year. This year clients have been able to drive their cars quite often this winter.

Phil, this has been a very warm and sunny winter in Colorado, with intermittent peroids of heavy snow in the mountains. My house is at 9500 ft at Breck and my drive way is on northeast side of the house. It gets very little sun and is a fully 20 degrees cooler than the sound west facing back of the house the patios and decks. The snow on our drive way or dead end road will not be gone until sometime in early mid May. So no driving locally here from mid November until May. I usally make it up at least once a month from the east coast but sometimes it will be 5-6 weeks. Our garage is heated and very well insulated but I usually turn the heat off. Temps rarely gets colder than upper 40s in the dead of the winter. Once I move up here fully time, I think I will keep the car, along with GT3 and hopefully a 458spider down in Denver in one of the car storage garages during the winter time. This way whenever the urge strikes or when we down in the city, I drive the sports cars in sunny warm Denver.
