    Hi All,
I appear to have just purchased an 83 Mondial QV coupe. Haha. It still has it's original black (Nero?) paint and clear coat finish. I'd say 90% of the paint is in good shape, but there are rock dings and a couple of other dings here and there that have been "home fixed" with gloss black paint. Additionally, there's a small area around the bottom edge of the gas filler port that had a bit of rust and the owner again "home fixed" with some gloss black paint.

I'd like to fix these areas but I really don't want to put a $20k paint job on a $20k car. Is this something a good body shop could spot fix and then buff to blend in with the original paint? Seems like a total noob question but in all my years I've never had that type of work done on a car before.

Otherwise , what are my options besides a full bare metal repaint? A "scuff and paint" deal? Prefer to spot fix if possible. Not trying to have a show car, but the last owners fixes, while fine from 10 ft away, are a bit chunky looking up close.

I'm in the NYC/Greenwich area of anyone has any suggestions. Also, please let me know if I'm in the wrong forum with this question.

    Thanks
    Dave

Depending on the size of the 'patches' a decent Paint guy should be able to blend it in easy. The orig Nero is an easy match-but don't expect it to be perfect bc black shows everything-but it should look better than where you are now

You're lucky, black is one of the if not the easiest color to spot fix.. Silver and especially gold are really tough..

Since you are in NY there is an excellent shop in Valley Stream NY. I am a happy customer, and they are always packed with Lambos, F Cars and Bentleys, plus normal high end and regular cars.

    If interested PM me.

As far as I know, there was NO CLEAR COAT finish on Ferraris before 1992: only the laquer (enamel) and that's all, until 1992.

Yes, you guys are right. I was just parroting what the seller had written to me, but of course they weren't doing clear coats in 1983. What I should have said is that overall the original paint is still in excellent condition, which is pretty impressive for a 32 year old car!

Oh, it has nothing to do with the "satisfaction" of "being right"...only with the fact that being no clear coat to be dealt with, it could (??) be easier to blend the additonial "home fixed" spots with the original paint...

In the 80s if the car was metallic it was clear coated.

Speak the truth only if you know the truth. Guessing and passing bs on the Internet doesn't help Anyone.

My 1982 308 was base coat clear from
The factory. single stage paint was solid colors.

If the remark is intended for me, may I point out:
    - that I have written "as far as I know", which clearly shows that I did not intended my words been taken as "the truth".
I'm always interested to learn new things, but at my age, being "right" or "wrong", or having the "truth" are of no interest to me. Having a degree (in fact, more than one) in modern history, among others, I know a thing or two about research and publications and I always do my best for NOT passing B.S on the Internet.
    - besides, my '89 328 GTS is "nero metallic", from the factory, and as far as I can tell when polishing the paint before waxing the car, the paint has no clear coat...

And, your car being a "1982" it would be nice to know, if "1982" is the Model Year (Europeans do not use "model year" for Ferraris, only calendar years), then is the car one of the last in Glidden Salchi paints, or one of the first in Glasurit paints?
