You're spot on. When I was 16 I visited the US and got my Calif driver's license in the proverbial lap around the block. Two years later I started my driver's education in Europe and it took me over 35 hours of driving lessons to be ready for the one hour exam. On the exam day it snowed and I drove for the first time in my life with chains. But I passed, so thorough is the training before.
It took an equal amount of driving lessons a year later to get my truck license. On non synchronized transmissions hauling 35tons that is.

No Doubt! Yes,I used to Drive all kinds of Trucks, including 80,000LB 18- Wheelers....Nothing like leaving enough stopping distance in front of you, knowing what, and how long it takes to stop this huge beast. Then having some woman in a van full of kids cut right in front of you. Talking about grabbing for any and every Brake you got....Thats when I smoked 3 packs a day....

But,this Show was quite interesting. It showed people in Germany who had to take a few Weeks of Driver Training....Not just the "Book Stuff",and even more training for the Autobahn. They should make that Mandatory here. And,if a kid passes, give them a little better Insurance Rate or Something.

The story about the Autobahn is very interesting in itself. Very Cool. If it ever comes on again,I am Taping it.

Since we're digging out old stories: I was hauling my 35 tons through the Swiss Alps, pulling a gigantic anti aircraft gun behind me through tight little mountain villages. What fun we had!

My favourite German Autobahn story: I dropped my ex wife at the Bremen train station. She was on her way to Hamburg. I hopped into my car, pedal to the metal and raced to Hamburg train station just to see whether I could beat the train. I did.

They are quite hideous... like a mix between a Cadillac, a Lincoln, and a deformed Mercedes.

The reps at the Maybach booth at the auto show didn't look too happy when I asked them "is that the new Seville?" :D

People weren't the problem, some stone walls were.

One night we raced each other on the trucks down the valley. I was somewhere mid field. As we arrived at the destination, the sun came out and I realized that we were going flat out down some tiny mountain roads I would never go as fast in the Ferrari. We were nuts.

Junior and I were out Cruising in the Ferrari all Afternoon, yesterday. First,we stopped by Fox Valley Motorcars to say Hi to Mike, and oggle the always unbelievable selection of Bella Automobiles that they have there. BTW...anyone we know who has a Red/Tan 308 Quatrovalve car there for Work?

The only other Exotic we saw actually driving was a Silver/Red Lotus Elise. It was heading Westbound on Roosevelt Rd. in Glen Ellyn, around 3:00PM-ish. Those cars look like they'd be a Blast! They had quite a few at FVM. And,IMO,they look good in any Color. Wish I was half my Weight, and a few inches shorter,I'd get one of those sinister little Go-Karts myself....:)

Saw LOTS of OLD Corvettes,(one fron the 50's and a few from the '60's) And old Muscle Cars,(Had a '69 Chevelle, with no hood,a HUGE Blower sticking up,and a Narrowed Rear-End with Giant Slicks behind us for awhile. We could hear the whine of the Blower Belt, and he'd jump on it occassionally....Probably gets 1-2 Miles per Gallon...But,who cares!)

Was anyone here, who has a black 355 convertible at ABT around 5ish this afternoon? Saw it in the parking lot by the entrance. Also saw a red 360 at the Hyatt downtown late last night.

Stop it, all of you! If you mention the forest preserves one more time I will cry in anguish :) !

God, it was great living in Oak Lawn, if for no other reason than to drive up and down 95th through the forest preserves! THAT, is a great drive...You, the road, and a canopy of trees. Oh, and the occasional deer.

When I had the sport bikes and porsches I drove through there at least 5 times a week...ooohhhh, I miss Illinois. On the bright side, in Wisonsin there are tons of coutry roads lined with corn fields where one can drive at very interesting speeds.... :).

The last 2 weekends all of the 1970's muscle cars are out, but thats about it. I did see a yello 308 in passing today on washington ave...any of you guys get lost and drive through Racine this week ;)?

    My favourite Autobahn story..........

Second or third time we were in Munchen for Octoberfest, we decided to rent a car and drive down to Garmisch-Partinkirchen.

I rented the Euro equivalent of a Ford Escort, and was able to obtain the neck breaking speed of 85mph., downhill and at full throttle.

    Was being passed by everyone!

The following year, and every time since, I rented big MBs.

I didn't want most cars to be able to pass me up!

If you're ever in Deutschland or Österreich, and want to drive the Autobahn, make sure you rent a car that's fast to fully enjoy the experience! :)

I got so many Autobahn stories, here an unfavourite one:

I borrowed my mom's VW Golf (Rabbit in the US) to go to the German GP in Hockenheim in 1981. Teamed up with two friends, each had a De Tomaso Pantera. We drove together through Switzerland to reach the German border in Basel. Once past it, all I saw was four taillights disappearing towards Stuttgart. They arrived hours ahead of me...

I have seen this guy too. He's ugly but his fiancee is hot... the car is ok. He's always driving it to the homes/places of Chicagolands studs and hotties.

On my way back from your house the thing I only heard happening to others happened to me. Northwest Hwy in Palatine, an Infiniti G something pulls up next to me and the 50 something driver asks, " Hey, is that the new Mustang?"

RocketBoy: "Um, no." I see the Inifiniti driver's wife smack her head as she is puzzled he would ask. Then the passenger in the back yells at the driver, "Don't you see the horse?"

Infiniti driver: " So what is it, its not, well is it?"

RocketBoy: " Well yeah, its a Ferrari."

Infiniti passenger to driver: " Dumb***t, that costs as much as 5 Mustangs. You ever see Bad Boys II?" Infiniti driver is obviously embarrassed.

Infiniti driver's wife: " Its a beautiful car."

I don't think this guy was joking.

I could care less about comparing a Ford to a Ferrari, but the new Mustang ( a car I think looks really sharp ) doesnt look anything like a Ferrari. I don't think they ever have in their boxy shape. Should I have told him he was in a very nice Hyundai?

also met a guy with a nice fly yellow 348ts. He's had it for 10 years, seems to kind have lost his lust for the car. Pointed him in the F-chat direction.

I saw a red enzo, silver carrera gt, light blue or silver 360 on the back of three flat beds this past saturday. The flat beds were also towing open trailers, one of which had i believe a db9 on it... They were stopped on an over pass while i was going under them. pretty sweet sight, couldn't make out the cars on the other trailers
