My computer locked up with a massive spyware problem today. Most spywares are small, and it takes a lot of them to slow down a computer. This thing was massive and slowed my compter down by 75% ..... there was no missing that I had a problem.

But, who-ever wrote this program... it attacks your spyware and anti-virus SW so that it can't complete a system scan and find the problem. All my attemps to scan would lock-up half way through and just stop.

I think it was a Spyware company that snuck this onto my computer in the first place. I get a note from UNSpy PC that for $37 they will fix my problem.

How did they know I had a problem? I've never heard of them?

After trying to run my Ad-aware and Norton anti virius a few times with no luck... (they'd both freeze and stop working in the middel of the scan). I went and deleted all my temporary internet files and cookies. I think I'm okay now.

I don't know anything about computers..... but thought I'd post this here incase anyone has heard of something like this?

Not sure it was a dirty trick by "UnSpy PC" but looks fishy to me.

    Out of my mind
do you have an unwanted tool bar across the top that you can't remove?

No, I didn't get stuck with a tool-bar at the top.

    I've seen that trick before

It's malware. Offhand, I suspect you have that nasty Wareout infection.

Some of the anti-virus software have a bootable CD-ROM mode that allows them to scan without interference from running software.

That's happened to me before. I think I either started my PC in safe mode or pressed ctrl-alt-del and Ended the tasks of programs that sounded unfamiliar and then continued with the spyware removal programs.

    Spyware has gotten smarter nowadays...Sucks!

Digital computer information, though very powerful....is not always truth.

What OS? Are you using a firewall?

    Download this file:
    http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

And PM me the results. I'll reply with what to disable. Then we'll go from there.

Do like I did. Get a Mac. I used to be a PC guy. But my computers were so junked up with malware, spyware and so much junk I could hardly use my computer. I damn near had to format my HD every 4 months. "Removal" software is joke. I think that stuff just puts more on it.

Ditch the PC. Get a Mac. Popups, Malware and virii have been a non-issue for me. I'll never buy a PC again. I may have some of that junk on my Mac, I don't know. I do know I have not seen anything odd. Nothing popping up, no slowing down, no problems. Totally worth it.

I had the same problem. Isn't it illigal? To give you a desease so that they can sell you the cure? Can you sue those companies for hijacking?

I agree. These people are real dirtbags!

But it seems our government and law makers are getting swamped, with way more crime than police power to take care of all the poblems.

Looks like the cyber cops have all their assets tied up fighting child porn.
So these other bastards get away with their games.

How about a private effort. Hire an attorney and go after these dirtbags.
