    Hi
the brakes on mi 488 spider (4000km) keep on squeaking at any occasion. doesn't matter if they are hot or not. even without touching the breakpedal there is a slight squeaking depending on steering-position just as if the pads kept on touching the discs. does anyone have the same "problem" or even a solution?

    Thanks

    Dan

I've got that same issue on my 2017 488. Not sure of a solution yet.

Thankfully, my 458 didn't squeak and my 488 doesn't squeak. I've been blessed by the brake squeak gods I suppose.

My service advisor told me that the brake noise is normal if excess brake dust has built up on the rotors. Carefully power washing the dust away will make them quiet again.

On the exposed side, or do you remove wheels to clean both sides?

No squeak as of 2.5 months and 1400 miles. Fingers crossed.

You can chamfer the edges of the pads to help reduce the noise. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but when I purchased my 458 Italia the previous owner (or the dealer on behalf of the previous owner) had done it in order to quiet things down a bit.

I had similar noise issues. My dealer told me that they cleaned the pads and “rotated” them by putting the one in the right to the left side and the one in the left to the right side.
They did that about a year ago, no noises since.

Having the same issue and it is driving me crazy. I had them at any speed, always. It's like having crickets in the car!
I do not agree it is typical on CCB cause I hade no issue on Porsche TTS and on the 2 Huracans.
Any solution? My car is from 2016 with 3k miles on it.

I have had a brake squeak on my 488 from new, over a year ago. It is most noticeable at low speed when not braking.
It is one of those noises that irritates, but for me, it is not so loud as to be a major issue.(I appreciate this may not be the case for others!).
I have been back to the dealer on a few occasions.
They have recently suggested that this is a brake pre-fill issue, and could be caused by friction, as the callipers move slightly closer to the discs in anticipation of braking. The brake pre-fill distance is apparently set by manufacturer software in Italy, and cannot simply be adjusted.
I am not sure this diagnosis is correct, as I can sometimes still hear the noise when I accelerate very gently.

On the 488’s: I tracked the coupe and from then on the brakes squeaked. I did not track the spider and the brakes never squeaked. I will track the Pista and hope they’ve corrected the problem or have different brakes.

Never had a 458 squeaking problem.

I’ve been told the extra power from the 488 on the same brakes as were in the 458 is the issue.

On my 2017 488, at around 3k-4k miles the Brakes began to have a rotational squeak. Started VERY minor. Started getting progressively louder. The hotter they got the louder they got. So loud the sound would be OVER the sound of the motor, radio, etc. People looking at you from several lanes over like "your car is falling apart". After 2 visits to the dealer they finally acknowledged something wasn't right. Ferrari of North America had to get involved. They started with basics, clean brakes and rotors. Swap pad sides. Sand pads and so on. Nothing stopped the sound after a little heat was in them. Finally they replaced my brake pads. Sound went away.....for a short time.

I noticed the noise come back one day VERY quiet though. Thought oh boy this problem again. The next day we were on a drive on one of our favorite roads in Mexico. I was coming off a straight at around 140mph into a turn, when I hit the brakes literally the peddle felt like nothing was there at all. I pump and jam them again and the brakes felt like maybe 10-15% of the stopping power. Some how I got through the turn and immediately the rotational brake noise was back. Louder than ever in fact.

I was done with the 488 at that point. Traded that car. My 458 never did anythign like this. My friends 458 never did anything like that. I have gotten many PM's and emails suggesting other 488's are seeing that type of thing though, more than you think should be happening. I think there is something major with these brakes that people aren't finding because most of you drive them fairly soft or put very little miles on them. Just my thoughts.

Ill dig when I get some time for a better video. Here is my 488 when it was doing it before they "fixed" it. This was minor compared to after the brakes actually failed later on.

they have to be "bedded" again - my dealer did this for me and noise was gone - its a whole process you can google it

Dealer did that with mine several times. As well as Sanding the pads and cleaning rotors. In fact the full brakes all 4 corners were off the car 5 different times at least chasing this issue. Bedding did not resolve the issues. Ferrari North America required that be part of the attempt to resolve it. No dice.

I believe this is the correct answer. Basically all 488's do this. It is not a totally random event. Note that for the most part in accelerating, there is no noise, as soon as you lift off the gas (even before you have ever touched the brake pedal), you will hear the squeaking. The software is lightly bringing the pads to the rotor (taking the slack out of the system so to speak) so it is immediately ready for hard braking. Another reason it does this is in the wet, the light touch on the rotors wipes away water on the surface of the rotors again, so the brakes are ready in a hard stopping situation. Unfortunately, virtually all high performance braking systems (ceramics or otherwise especially with aggressive pads), will squeak if there is light brake pressures due to vibrations and a resonant frequency in the pad ("disc brake quiet" that people used to use in garage brake jobs was just really a mild adhesive to keep down the vibrations). Washing the car leaves a residue on the rotors and may diminish the squealing but it is only temporary. Changing to a less aggressive pad material might lessen in but I have no experience with this in a Ferrari.

I understand the reason but I had in the last two years a Huracan 610-4 and Performante (an put a lot of miles on them) and never heard a noise from the brakes. Moreover, when raining, On the H you can feel that every minute the pads touch the disc to clean it for water. But you hear no noise at all. And, strangely, brake system supplier is the same. And H brakes are, according to me, better than 488 ones ;)

Could be different pad material. I have had ceramic systems on many cars. I found Porsches squeal like a pig, the BMW system was actually pretty quiet, and Ferrari's have been silent until the 488. Not sure why.
