Hey all. My brakes are driving me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've tried everything I could think of to stop that horrible squeaking. Does anyone else have this issue? I took the brakes off and cleaned them. There's no rust on them and they have plenty of meat. Any Ideas??

There are many threads on this if you search. brake noise is a big problem and choice of pad, installation method and other things will cause/stop noise.

Pad choice is the best 'fix', a clean up during install, chamfer lead and trail edges, sticky locator discs that fit into the pistons will usually avoid noise.

Check the Ricambi website for some pad choices.

Brake squeal is often caused by the vibration between the piston and the backing plate. Try using an anti-squeal compound on the backing plates, or perhaps some anti-squeal shims on the plates.

Many of our customers say the Porterfield pads are very quiet and low dust.... but they too can squeal if improperly installed or bedded:

this always works for me. remove the pads again. This time spread an even amount of high temp silicone sealant on the back side of each pad. Let the sealant dry and install the pads. The other thing I do is grind a slight angle to the leading edge of the brake pad material.

Use copperfat/grease on the outer side of the pad before you install it. No more squeaking.

    Don't use race pads.

Have all 4 rotors machined (turned down). Install brand new Axxis Metalmaster brake pads at this point. Use antisqueal compound on the outside of the back of the pads.

Do not re-use your pads that are squeaking.

With the car on jacks and in Neutral, spin each wheel to see that the wheels spin freely (e.g. brakes not catching, rotors not warped) and that you have no wheel bearing failure noises.

Incredible pads. No noise, little dust, stop on a dime. And the Porterfield tech dept is very helpful with any questions. I did not need anti-squeal compound.

You might just need to bed your brakes in again - 6 to 8 hard stops from approximately 65mph to 5mph (don't stop fully) often fixes squeaky brakes by transferring some pad material to the rotors. This assumes that your rotors are not heavily worn, or warped. Do a thread search on "squeaky brakes" and you'll find a how-to video on this procedure from one of the large brake manufacturers.

ps. make sure there's nobody behind you when you do this!

Works better from 100 to 60 than from 65 to 5 since the amount of heat being disipated rises with the square of velocity. Just don't do this where the constabulatary forces are present.

I once owned a Mercedes that had brake squeal. Absolutely nothing I tried stopped the squealing. In the end I replaced the pads and the squeal went away.

I've had other vehicles that had squealing brakes. The above remedies worked.

Also, be sure to use the specific grease for disc brakes on the back of the pads. I used regular lithium grease a while back as a test to see if it was the vibration squeal, and the squeal went away for about 3 weeks. Stupid me REALLY should have stopped by the auto parts store and paid the $1.50 for the two ketchup packets of brake grease, but I was in a hurry. So now I get to do the job again some time. :) Live and learn...

I believe some pads squeak, as was mentioned earlier, because they were never bedded. This is the Ferrari/Brembo procedure for Pagid 4-4 racing pads. Difficult to find somewhere to do the high speed stops, even from 80 mph or so instead of 100 mph. Mine are bedded, but still give an occasional squeal, but not annoyingly loud.

Yup, right you are Mitch. Using the squares formula, going from 100 to 65 creates 37% more heat than 65 to 5.

I only said 65 cause that's the legal limit here in the US and going any faster than that would, of course, be against the law and unthinkable.....

    Hi Daniel

Does these Porterfield pads fit with the Fiorano handling pack, like I have?

Ceramic pads squeal more than other compounds like semi-metallic.
