Love the Cali. Been driving it for a year and a half. Only issue I would love to fix (other than that crappy sat nav) are the squeaky brakes. Do others have this issue? Brought it to the dealer and they offered to trim the brake pads down. Any better solutions? Will replacing pads help? Any recommended pads?

When I test drove the Cali and mentioned that the brakes squeek it was suggested to take the car up to speed (70 mph) and then stomp on the brakes until the car stops. May have to be done more than once.

Even if it doesn't fix the squeek you will have fun doing it.

My dealer replaced my pads. After bedding in as described above, the squeal is gone.

My dealer heard my brakes and replaced the front pads with a newer compound. Now the rear ones squeak a little. No new compound solution for the rears. He suggested that a more aggressive braking style would help.

Fixing the queaking is very easy ... although it may be hard to do for many of you but the brakes REALLY REALLY like to be used VERY VERY VERY HARD once in a while. Not every day or even every week like I do but when they start squeaking I find that a full stop from 60 mph to zero IN FULL ABS, meaning all of you that baby your Cail will need to get over that and stand on the brakes. Yep, they will smell a bit but I will bet you that the squeaking goes away.

Oh, yah ... be VERY careful that no one is within 800 feet behind you when you do it. If they are much closer they will hit you since you stop MUCH better than most anything else on the road. R&T says 106 feet.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

    1. I would probably in the "baby my Ferrari" camp, except when I am on a track. I have gone from 160 mph to 60mph a few times (end of straightaway on Fuji Speedway), full ABS and all. Guess the brakes were not squeaking after that, although I don't remember. Will find a quiet road and get this done.

    2. Is that a different (new) compound that the dealer replaced for the front brakes? I asked the dealer in Tokyo, and they said there was nothing they can do, except cutting the brake pads smaller. It was a week before my Fuji trip, so I definitely canned that idea.

    3. How often do the pads need to be replaced? I think I am on the original pads, which I got (with the car) in Dec 2009.

The braking power is amazing and it's more apparent when I am in my wife's S3 trying to brake. Just wish it would squeak less. I am in Tokyo, and 99% of the cars do not squeak here. Don't mind the attention I get from the exhaust noise, but not brake noise!

I spent 2.5 hours on the Mid-Ohio race course last November and I think that ate 1/2 of the brakes life. Two weeks ago with 21,500 miles on the car the brake warning went off. I had them (all four sets of pads) replaced and they all needed it. be aware that the top of the pads wears more than the inside edge ... and it is the inside edge that is easiest to see. I think the top was warn 2 to 3 mm more than the inside edge, all four sets of pads.

I would bet that I could have gotten 45,000 miles out of them without the race track time. And I probably have taken at least 80 people for rides and when I do that I get hard into the ABS at least two or three times just to show the braking power. If I didn't do that I wold assume even far more brake life ... but that would be silly, might as well drive a Prius if you don't want to push the car to the limit with some regularity.
