My dad's new 348 lets out a horrible squealing noise on start up for about 1.5-2 minutes then the noise stops completely. It sounds like it is coming from the cam belt area or somewhere around the front of the engine. Any ideas?? Thanks, Jerry.

Could be a loose/glazed accessory belt(alternator, etc.) trying to get up to speed.

Or it could be a bearing headed south.

Check the belts first; they're the easiest.

I recommend not driving the car until you've found the problem.

My hunch is it's the alternator belt.

Okay you could have one of two things.

The first could be that one of the accessory belts is loose or worn. Have a look to see that the alternator belt and a/c belt are tightened properly and in good condition. If one of the belts is loose it will slip and get glassed because the pully spins with out turning the belt at the same rate. As a result the belt gets shiney and gives you the squeal until it gets warm and expands to were it doesn't slip. A good little trick is to take a piece of sand paper and scuff the belt lightly to get rid of the shine. But that is just a temporary fix until you get a new belt. You will also want to check the condition of the tentioner bearing for the alternator.

Now the other is the bad one. If after you have checked the condition of the accessory belts and are still getting the noise then it is one of the bearings. It is either the bearing for the water pump, or one of the tentioner bearings of the cam belt. If it turns out to be one of those DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR! The reasons is that if one of them freezes up it will burn through the cam belt. When the cam belt breaks, you guessed it, so does the engine. So you will need to pull the engine to have the bearings changed.
