I got some in car video from Summit this past week in the SR3 (1300 version).

Hoping to test an SR8 sometime next spring (SR# w/ 350 hp 8 cyl.)

I hope to have the owner bring his two SR3's to the next FOW/FCA event to give people some rides.

That's great, Jon! It looks like you get a really nice run out of that turn after the bridge. I'm guessing you like this car!

Awesome video looks Jon. Summit Point looks like a track that's great fun to drive. I checked your website and congrats on your recent wins!
Is the season done at Summit Point? I'm interested in getting to know the series and tracks in NoVA area as I recently moved here.

    Jack,

Yes I do like the car. Mainly I look at what the 355 C cost me in terms of maintenance and also the cost to build the car and I am somewhat stunned that the Radical is so user friendly. I've driven all manner of Formula cars but most are not cars you can simply put gas in and driver at the track.

It's a great car for the money but the problem I encountered with the 355 is still there..........it's too fast for track days. No one to play with and then you start getting bored and trying for lap times, which at some point leads to damage.

I am interested in the car as a race car, but the fields are still too small in D and C sports and frankly the speed scares me a bit. I feel really safe in my Acura with the roof and cage (not to mention it's way slower) but I am hesitiant to race wheel to wheel in one of these at 150 mph.

However, all that being said, for the money you can't touch it. It'll destroy any Challenge car, 360 or 355. It'll whip modified Vipers all day long on most tracks.

    Fernando,

Welcome to Northern Virginia. This coming weekend is the final race and will decide the Championship in my class. I am tied with my rival for the title.

The two closest tracks are Summit Point and VIR. Both great tracks. Also on the list but slightly further away are Beaverun (about 4 hours) and Watkins Glen (about 6 hours and my favorite track).

Email me if you have further questions.

    Regards,

    Jon

How do the radicals compare with open-wheelers like Formula 3 and Formula BMW?

James the Radical 1500 (252 hp) laps about the same as most B series F3 cars. Radical claims on their website that at most UK circuits the times are about the same.

There were also 25 Turbo Radicals, one of which smashed the Ring' production car lap record by 13 seconds (not really sure the Radical should be called a production car, but it is street legal in the UK and some countries in Europe).

I think the SR8 will be significantly faster than any F3 car but slower than an F3000 car.

    Cheers,

    Jon

    Radical Makes Own V8

Radical is now in the final development stages of a small- block, high-revving V8 based around superbike technology.

Using Powertec, its in-house engineering arm, the Peterborough-based firm has completed lengthy dyno testing on a 2.6-litre unit to be fitted into a new race- car and sold for road car applications.
The 72degree V8 uses Suzuki GSXR1300 cylinder heads and barrels; all other major components are supplied by Powertec. It runs a flat-plane crank for high-rev balance and features a bank of oil pumps to scavenge the integral multi-stage dry sump.
Known as the RPA V8 (Radical Powertec Series A) it has so far produced a heady 383bhp at 10,000rpm and a peak torque figure of 207lb ft at 6000rpm . Fully-dressed, it weighs just 95kg. In most applications it will be mated to a specially designed Quaife six-speed sequential transaxle although an alternative gearbox is available for front-wheel-drive installations.
The first port of call for the RPA V8 will be Radical's new SR8. Based on the SR3 racer-cum-hardcore trackday machine, it develops more grip through a combination of increased downforce, bigger wings and larger Dunlop tyres. These racers will compete in a six-round, 12-race championship and from next spring there'll be a road-legal trackday version.
Production of the first 25 engines has begun and since the first dyno test interest from around the world is said to be 'enormous'. That tight 'V' makes the unit very compact, allowing it to fit in anything from Elises and Caterhams upwards. It will be available with optional twin counter-rotating balancer shafts for smoother running. The RPA will cost around £18,800.
