Any Stevie Ray Vaughan fans out there? I've got a total of 6 CD's... What an awesome guy. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm a big fan, but I believe BigTex/Speedy knew the guy. Awesome musician. Extremely disappointed that I didn't get a chance to see him live before he left this world.
Ive got everything he ever released plus some downloaded live stuff. SRV was just the best rock/blue guitar player I have ever seen or heard. Period. I saw him play at Lakewood Amphitheatre here in Atlanta in 1990 with BB King, Dr. John and a bunch of other blues greats. He was amazing. So many rockers it seems go through the same cycle. They burst on the scene with incredible talent and creativity. They produce some amazing music. They trash their lives with drugs, alcohol and an absurd lifestyle. Their creativity declines steadily and they end up living on their legend or dead. SRV was different. We kicked his drug and alcohol addiction and he was making the best music he had ever produced at the time of his death. What a freaking shame. I can remember channel flipping and seeing the news flash on MTV about his death. I was floored. I have had 2 real "heroes" from public figures in my life. Guys whom I thought exhibited not only talent, skill, perseverence and supreme dominance in their chosen field but whom also seemed like real people and who gave back to the world more than they took out. Juan Manual Fangio was the first and SRV was the second. Both dead now.... a shame. Terry
Keep looking..there's LOTs more...try to find the one where he plays a radio station gig that got recorded with Albert King...SRV really looked up to Albert.. I was not a personal acquaintance, but moved to Austin at exactly the same time, so saw him repeatedly in the early years, as well as later on the Houston scene...Austin was kind of strange, in that even if you were famous.... people left you alone in public, years ago. You can still run into Jimmie Vaughan at car clubs and such, real low key. I attended his funeral out of respect for his talent and personal strengths TSpringer recapped above. They directed me inside with Stevie Wonder, ZZ Top, Bonnie Raitt and others but I declined, waiting outside in the heat for the public portion...at the end I stopped, ...reached and touched his coffin, told him 'thanks' and then let him go on.... That's how the old blues dudes say it..."they've gone on", you can hear Albert Collins say it on "Showdown".....now he's gone as well..... Support live music where ya can..... Now Buddy Guy, I've met Buddy Guy...........LOL! Wolfgang knew SRV personally..he's got stories to tell!
Also, look for the double CD of him Live in Montreax Switzerland, there's a DVD as well..... It really hurt Stevie, when they boooed him playing electric Texas Blues, the first CD you can HEAR the crowd's displeasure, they also did not know him or his playing style........... The SECOND CD, several years later in his career, has him returning to thunderous acclaim! A good retrospective, of how it was..........
Yup, it was his last tour. Summertime great weather, outdoor seating.... it was a really great show. Joe Cocker played at this show as well. It was only about 2 months before his death. Terry
Sure that wasn't Jeff Beck??????? If you look ALL the way thru Zupra's Cafe you'll see a section of a few pages where SRV comes up, Wolfgang was backstage practicing guitar licks with him and Stevie's without his hat!!! Pretty rare photo, I'll see if I can find it....brb
You won't be able to... Old photos haven't been restored yet. SRV and Jimi Hendrix are great musicians!!! I love them both...
I was at the final concert and was totally amazed at how he stole the show that night. He stood out head and shoulders over the other performers and put on an utterly amazing show. I was so excited after the concert that I wanted to tell everyone I knew how fantastic he was. The next morning I was shocked to hear the terrible news.
You were in Alpine Valley that night????? Buddy Guy was, as well.... I've always suspected he jumped the copter due to traffic...I KNOW what a ski resort road is like, with everyone leaving at once......
Ah, I remember in a previous thread you said something like, "We buried him in Pleasant Grove" or something similar. A shame, I live about 10 or 15 miles from his grave and haven't ever been there. I need to correct that.
Growing old is a female dog. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, when I had nothing holding me down, I was heavy into the Allman Bros. Talk about crash and burn. Fast forward to the 80s, and I'm a family man with dues to pay. Stevie Ray played all over Houston, all of the time. How many times did I see him? Zip, none, nada, zero. Because I live about 50 miles outside of Houston, going into town for a rock 'n roll show was more than I could bear. I had to give the kids their baths and read them some nighty nite stories. Two quick stories: The time must have been 1988 or so. I was driving back to Sacra-tomato from a day of sking at Lake Tahoe. As I was winding my way back down US 50, I heard Stevie come on the radio singing "Crossfire." It was the first time that I had ever heard that tune. Me and Stevie set some record times coming off that mountain that day. Then in 1990, I was flying from Colorado into Austin for some odd reason. My seat mate was a guy who occasionally jamed with Double Trouble. As I was walking through the terminal, I heard nuthin but SRV over the loudspeakers. When I got in the cab, I asked the cabbie what's up. He started bawling and pulled over to the side of the road. Dr "Only the good die young" Who
Drop over....it's in Oak Cliff, his old neighborhood, kinda south of town. They may not point it out....lots of kooks out there these days....... Can't recall the Cemetary, I'm an old guy now too, LOL!
A friend has been there, and can give me explicit directions. I do know better than to roll into Oak Cliff without a clue as to where I'm going. It's not nearly as scary as people north of 635 believe it is, but I wouldn't walk around there at night with money falling out of my pockets either !
Im a real big fan of his music. Back in the days when 'Mars Music store' existed they held a guitar playing contest to see who could play the "Pride and Joy" solo as accurately as possible. I was one of the many few who sucked. That was back when I first started playing the guitar BUT now I can play just like him.
Jimmie has all the guitars and amps. I'm a big fan of Stevie but sadly didn't really get into his music until after his death. I've got Stevie's entire catalog and anything on dvd that includes him as well. I'll always regret not getting to see him live. SRV was a real man with real problems. Happily he was strong enough to not only take care of himself, but go out of his way to help take care of others. There are many, many people in Austin who miss him dearly. Nobody should pass through Austin without taking a few minutes to visit his memorial there. I always stop by to say "hi" when I'm in town. You've heard about love giving sight to the blind? My baby loves me 'cause the sun does shine.
Too many favorites to list. Chitlins con carne Riviera Paradise Texas Flood (of course) Dirty Pool Life Without You (live versions of this can be especially good) Tin Pan Alley Pride and Joy Voodoo Chile Change It Coudn't Stand the Weather lots and lots more
I like Jimi Hendrix's version of Voodoo Child a lot more than SRV's Voodoo Chile. Riviera Paradise is a good song, I listen to it to fall asleep. The begining of Pride and Joy is excellent!
I was there that night as well. For various reasons I had missed out on a few other opportunities to see him live. That night I insisted on going with some friends even though I didn't have a ticket. I scalped one outside, and it turned out to be his last show! I was devastated. Check out the DVD "Live at the el Mocambo". It's filmed in a tiny club in Canada during an early tour with tons of great shots.
I always wondered if there was any professional video of the final concert. There were cameras set up there. As I said earlier in this thread it was an amazing concert.
SRV is sorely missed. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
