OK, I was harboring a misconcenption. I have had a 348 Spider for 4 1/2 years and just got this 348TS SS. I was under the impresison that they are essentially the same cars mechanically.

Well, let me tell you, after spending a lot of time with the SS this weekend (yes, I finally picked it up from the shop), they are not the same at all.

The exhaust is less restrictive and louder than the Spiders. In fact, it is similar to a Tubi with less high pitch. I think the acceleration is similar, but it sure sounds meaner.

Handling is different too - the Spider was better, but I think I need to sort something out on this car - like alignment and new front tires. I am waiting for a new wheel set - the 355's - before I take all this on. For now I am enjoying the differences and having a great time. Also, the SS has much less body flex.

    New pix later tonight.

    Vince,

Unfortunately, you are still harboring some misconceptions; and I say this with respect as I desire to offer some corrections.

The Speciale exhaust is not in any way superior to that on the Spiders. In fact, the Speciale exhaust is the Spider exhaust! They are identical. For this reason, the Speciale has been described as having the "Spider exhaust." The Speciale/Spider exhaust is a one-can muffler as opposed to the two-can muffler of earlier 348s.

The Spider has a slightly superior engine. For model year 1994, the redline was raised to 7700 RPMs from 7400 RPMs. Also, the 2.7 engine management system is slightly improved on the Spider.

In fact, the Spider has various other improvements that pre-1994 348s do not have. Indeed, the 348 Spider was built from the ground up rather than as a 348 with the roof chopped off.

The Spider engine sounds and feels different from that on pre-1994 348s.

    Ahh, typo, sorry.

I just edited my post; I meant to say:

    I think the '94 factory challenge's redline is 7800 rpm's.

This is incorrect insofar as the factory technical manuals for all models 1994 indicate a redline of 7700 RPMs.

Basically, the factory technical manuals indicate the following for 348s:

    1989-1993:

maximum power = 300 horsepower SAE
    corresponding engine speed = 7000
    maximum engine speed = 7400

    1994-1995:

    maximum power = 310 SAE
    corresponding engine speed = 7200
    maximum engine speed = 7700

    Torque statistics are identical.

My '94 owners manuel does not list a maximum engine speed. Where did you get your data?

It does list 310 hp @ 7200. I don't have a source, but have read the challenge cars had the redline bump to 7800. It has also been claimed that the ECU had different mapping than the others.

Didn't the '93 SS model have similar output @ 310 hp?

I have been told that the SS models have the same output as the Spiders, or as it was put, the Spiders have the same as the SS cars. My mechanic tells me that the part number for the SS exhaust is different. Now is it different from the normal 348 exhaust or the Spider exhaust, I couldn't tell.

Either way, the car is as I have described - different from the Spider I ouwned. Of course, with a used car having no records it's kind of difficult to tell just what is and isn't in it.

Here are some new pix of the car. I finally noticed the rear emblems missing - don't care; I kind of like it that way.

I dig that interior. I could easily do the black 348 body color, too.

There was no "speciale" text or badge on the back of the engine lid. Only the cavallino on between the tail lights. Yours looks correct!

This is right- no badging on Speciales (except those converted to Challenge cars, which say "348 Challenge" on the back).

The challenge cars and the competizione had the script at the back along the humble (g)tb/ts. The spider also didnt have a script correct?

My sources are all the technical manuals for the complete 348 model range. If I knew how, I would post as a picture for all to see.

Your owner's manual does not list a maximum engine speed? That is strange. It should be on the "engine family" page, which might be B4.

The figure of 7800 is just incorrect. The tachometer is imprecise, and often those who wrote articles about the car simply looked at the tachometer and came up with a redline.

Loved your quote in the 348 Brotherhood magazine, by the way. Something like "Whenever I take the S4 I ask myself why I didn't take the 348."

    Priceless.

Thanks all on the complements. It is taking alot of time and money to get the car right, but I am dedicated and have the time. It's 78/100, BTW Dean.

I've been sniffing thru the Brotherhood (mag) for improvement tips. The first thing is to get a set of 355 or 360 wheels and tires. Once it handles better, then it's on to the engine. Hmm, supercharging or 355/550 tbs upgrade. Choices....
    :D
