I only vaguely remember the movie. It's A Star is Born, a remake where Kris Kristfferson tears off in a Daytona spyder after being spurned by the heroine and totals the car. I don't know if they smashed the original or a copy of it--this was before Daytona spyder replicas were common as dirt. At least I hope,if they smashed a real one they did it without the Daytona engine ...anybody know the story. I got the SN from this Google listing below,w which kind of implies the accident was an accident?:

Chinetti Motors files show the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder was extensively wrecked, during the filming of the movie "A star is born" with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand ...

A year or two or three after he purchased the car, Jon Shirley told me that his Michelotti re-bodied 365 Daytona 14299 was the car wrecked in the movie --- or perhaps one of the several wrecked in the movie, the car --- or one of the several cars --- that was --- were --- provided by Chinetti to the movie producer. After being sold by Shirley in the Gooding auction at Pebble Beach last year, this car was shown along with several other modified Ferraris at this years Cavallino. including the Glistening Gold 330 with the tail (whale?) fins.

That was a REAL Ferrari in that movie???? REALLY?

Hopefully someone has more detail on the story if true.... wow. I saw that in
the theater with my now-wife (then girlfriend, followed by 20 year marriages each,
then divorces, then together again and remarried in 2004) - I always thought it
was a Ferris Beuller kind of thing.

    More info PLEASE!!

taking some info from barchettacc.com 72 - Greer, USA
76 - crashed during the film The Gumball Rally" (directed and co-written by Rory Nelson) - 16467 was replaced then with 14829 for the rest of the filming

Does that mean they had to use the standby car, that they weren't intending it be crashed so hard?

Was it ever mentioned what scrap price Chinetti paid for it?

7?- rebuilt by Chinetti at an internal cost of over $6k, rebuilt suspension and engine, new drive train and paint hulk, it became one of the special Michelotti Spyders

80 - Michelotti Spyder shown at the Torino Motor Show

85 - Ross Provenzano, USA - light red

96/feb/10 V. Cavallino Classic Ross Provenzano

    08/may/10 - NS - Bonhams Monaco auction - estm.: €525-675k

Going back to the turqoise car, the one with the fixed in place rollover bar that seems to be vinyl or leather covered, that must be an alternative one as the barchettacc.com picture shows no fixed roll bar and red paint.

I think I got the movie chronologyl straight, 16467 crashed twice, once by accident
in Gumball (unseen in the movie) , the second time on purpose in Star is Born.

But relating to the styling of the Michelotti spyders, at first I assumed that Coco, since he fancies himself a car designer, had a role in determining the shape of the car but since five were made
    (chassis numbers below)

    14299
    14897
    15003
    15965
    15467

and maybe some of them before 16467 was so re-bodied, weren't they just buying an "off the shelf" design that Michelotti already had the body bucks for and thus the Chinettis had no influence in its styling? Incidentally, does anybody know which Michelotti spyder Luigi ordered for his wife?

Finally re present day values? Did the Michelotti Daytona spyders lag behind regular Daytona spyders for decades, and only recently began to outshine them in auction sales? (not counting the one owned by Steve McQueen, anything he owned is gold...) One wonders if it would be worth rebodying one back to Pininfarina bodywork if they still lag behind...

The car 14299 was the car that Chinetti ordered for his wife. Jon Shirley sold it at
the Gooding 2013 Pebble Beach auctions as lot 120 for $720,000. I suppose that
this does not include a 10% commission. It is blue with Chinetti's wife name
Marion inscribed above both left and right door handles. There is a lot of
information about the car in the Gooding catalog which makes no mention of
the Star is Born movie, so I guess that the story that I told in my previous post was wrong
--- but I was just repeating what I was told years ago.

14299 was the one built for Chinetti's wife Marion. It sold for $720k at the 2013 Gooding Pebble Beach auction.

    1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona NART Spider

Body by Michelotti; S/N 14299; Metallic Blue, Grey/Cognac leather; Blue cloth top; Older restoration, 2- condition; Hammered Sold at $654,545 plus commission of 10.00%; Final Price $720,000. -- Chrome spoke polished rim Borrani wire wheels, Michelin XWX tires, Alpine CD stereo, brown leather rim Momo steering wheel, A/C, two tops, tools, 1980 Turin show car, Ferrari Classiche attested -- An expensive exercise that resulted in making a Daytona look like a Corvette, commissioned in 1976 by Luigi Chinetti for his wife Marion. Restored to like new with excellent paint and very good lightly worn and creased interior. -- It's easy to be conflicted by the coachwork on this Ferrari one-off. Its lines suggest a C4 Corvette, but they are intrinsically sleek and aerodynamic. The wide grille below the front bumper foreshadows the frontal treatment of recent front-engined Ferraris. The angular rear deck and fenders could have come right off a Pontiac Fiero. So, an open Daytona with one-off coachwork and Chinetti family history at a post-block transaction price just under 3/4 million dollars. Not a bad thing.

The 365 GTB/4 presented here is a remarkable example of the coachbuilt Ferrari. Completed at the Ferrari factory on May 19, 1971, 14299 was originally built as a US-specification 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta and finished in the elegant color scheme of Grigio Ferro with red leather upholstery. The Daytona was delivered new to official North American distributor Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut, and subsequently sold to its first owner, Dr. Silva.
After several years of use, Dr. Silva returned 14299 to Luigi Chinetti; and, in 1976, he shipped the lightly used Daytona to Carrozzeria Giovanni Michelotti in Torino, Italy, for a special project.

Of the very few custom-bodied Daytonas ever built, Luigi Chinetti was responsible for the vast majority, commissioning five highly individualized examples between 1974 and 1976. Working in cooperation with Carrozzeria Michelotti, Chinetti commissioned his first coachbuilt Daytona in 1974. Unveiled at the Torino Motor Show, the one-off design featured a Targa top, dramatic cut-down doors and molded bumpers. For the 1975 NART Le Mans effort, Chinetti ordered a Daytona Competizione (15965) with Michelotti coachwork. Similar to the original 1974 design, this body featured clean modern lines and a Targa top.

In 1976, Chinetti ordered three Michelotti Spiders of the same design based on chassis 14299, 15003, and 16467. In fact, Michelotti built all three cars using the same wooden body buck, incorporating minor differences in trim, color, and specification. When Marion Chinetti passed away in December 1982, her coachbuilt Ferrari remained in France and, in 1984, it was shown at the La Baule Concours d'Elegance.

In 1985, the Ferrari made its return to the US and was sold to Los Angeles classic car dealer Marty Yacobian. In November 1986, Mr. Yacobian displayed the special Michelotti Daytona at the Palm Springs Concours d'Elegance.

In January 1990, 14299 was offered at the annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction and sold to Richard Gorman of Vantage Motorworks in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. From there, the Michelotti Spider was sold to Marv Tonkin, brother of famed Portland Ferrari dealer Ron Tonkin.

In September 1991, the current owner acquired 14299 from Al Mohr Imported Cars of Seaside, California. Today, the Michelotti Spider remains in exceptionally original condition and, at the time of cataloguing, the odometer displayed just 1,568 miles. It is believed that this figure represents the total mileage since the Carrozzeria Michelotti rebuild in 1976 and not the total mileage from new.

As would be expected of a well-preserved original Ferrari, the Michelotti Spider retains the correct tool kit and jack as well as its original accessory hardtop. In addition to these features, the Ferrari Classiche Attestation Certificate of Historical Interest and a history report compiled by Swiss historian Marcel Massini are included in the sale.

Despite the fact the styling of the Michelotti spyders isn't that great, it seems that rarity would dictate they would be worth more than any stock Daytona Spyder but I think stock Daytona spyders have already gone for more than a million at one auction or another.

Another factor that has to be weighed in when determining value, and it's hard to attach a dollar value to that is previous famous owners. Thus the former Steve McQueen Michelotti spyder is worth more than ones not owned by him. Certainly the Chinetti family car should be worth more than one sold to a non-famous person.

The targa topped car which has different styling but is by Michelotti--the ex Dan Ward car--has some racing history, so that's another plus in another area where you can score points with the car's history. That one I definitely wouldn't consider rebodying into stock Daytona spyder.

It sounds from your catalog description like the Chinettis were involved with the styling , suggesting this and that, approving the drawings, especially if the one built for Mrs. Chinetti was the first one, was it?

Thanks for your opinions on these odd-duck cars that are so hard to establish in the pecking order.

I knew the owner of 14829, Joe Crevier pretty well back in the 70's. Right after he bought the car, we were out in it and he said they used three cars in A Star is Born. One for the California shots (I think that was his), one for the Arizona running shots and then a previously wrecked car. He also said, though I never saw it, that the had the contract for rental on the car for ASIB.

14829 was supposedly also used in Gumball Rally. and from what I have heard the wreck was 16467. But there are several murky stories on when and where it was wrecked. The one that seems to make reasonable sense is that it was wrecked in the filming of Gumball Rally and then used as the wrecked car in ASIB.

    Or maybe not!

    Hello,
My first post. If you guys were still interested, I know a whole bunch about the car. I went to school with Joe Crevier's son Bob. We used to race 100cc Sprint Karts together (before the 125cc shifters). I've been to his home many times and actually got a chance to pit for him when he ran at Riverside with his Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Coupe/Racecar #16407. One of his drivers at that time was Al Unser, Jr. I had no idea how lucky I was at that time! Anyway, let me know if you guys want more info...
