Anyone else wonder how this works? For 50-100$ you get a start named after you, and a "certificate." Is this a great ploy, or what??? Basically you are paying 100$ for a certificate???

If this had any trademark/copyright weight to it, it could pose for some hilarious moments in the future. Could you imagine if a certain star HAD to be called by the name on the certificate? I could see NASA now, referring to star "Tyrone Muhhammed Jacksonain", or some other silly name... "Bubba Jones" "Kayeesaha Buckfield"... "is hurtling toward earth..."

We got one for our son. It's kinda cool. It comes with the cert, celestial map and what not. When I get around to it, I'll have parts of it framed for his room. We also gave one as part of a shower gift and it was a big hit at the luncheon.

You'd think Luke Skywalker would already have a death star named after him.

So how are they legally allowed to do this? Why can't we sell the naming rights to various buildings, and keep a log in our own little registry...

I have dibs on the Sears Tower, hereonto called "Bo."

Hmmm...I like this...Now, how do I market it?

I don't know if there is anything to stop you. If you can find people to shell out $$ for it, then I say go for it.

That's the thing - you CAN start a biz selling the rights to name a building. The question is - are you authorotative for the name of the building? In your case, no. In the case of the folks who sell star names, also no. They have as much right to name a star as I do to name peoples cars. It may be real to ME, but what defines real? Most people would consider "real" to be the official body who is authorotative for names of said objects agrees/endorses the name.

The world body that is considered authorotative for star names does not sell names, so any purchased star name is as authorotative as me selling star names.

What happens when we discover intelligent alien life and they tell us our planet is called IEFMIO2394 in their language? Do we say "ohhh, right then, we'll change it"? :)
