Scene works because of the reactive expressions of Ben and luke otherwise the humor would wear off in three seconds. Don't laugh at more or my mommy will make you put me in the movie.
According to wikipedia the video hit 900m views. He could have made more than $350k had he hired an agent and gotten some tv commercials and the like... lack of vision from the parents
At one point the video had the most number of views of any internet viral video, I think it made it into the Guiness Book of World records for 2008. Like you said he could've made some serious money out of it. Even if he got half a cent for each view that's still $4.5 million.
