Ok so my ignition cylinder cracked after many broken keys. Replacement even a used unit is 1k. Is it sacrelige to put in a keyless push to start button system where the key would have gone in? Opinions, please. Obviously I'd do the summit racing and do a red "engine start" button. This key thing has been a huge issue and I'm just over it...thanks for any input

If it's for your own use, do it. Fix it when you can, IF you want to.

Ok I. Just asking if its tacky to replace the key with a pushbutton start like a modern car...I know it's not purist but man the valets keep breaking keys and it's a royal pain...

Make it discrete, and avoid the tackiness issue............ and avoid the valet monkeys. As I learned from one of our more distinguished FChatters: "Where would you like me to park it?" followed by a nice tip often will get you a good spot.

Ok cool I'll go ahead. Super discreet. With door locks etc all in. I have to say this. In 2019 in los angeles this car gets more love than anything. Vintage is so big here right now I have people taking photos everywhere I go. In spite of the constant issues and disreputable mechanics it's been well worth it. Still have a ways to go on the restoration - dash was done a year ago and the idiot mechanic in palm beach left it outside and uncovered and it peeled back...need new suspension...speedo doesnt work...but it's worth it. One step at a time.

How do you plan to handle the steering wheel lock? Just disable it?

What exactly is "broken" in your lock. There is a plastic electrical connector on the back that wears out and key gets sloppy and it does not turn or jams. The part is about a $50 BMW part and very easy to change with the tach removed; I replaced mine. There is a good thread on this if that is your issue.

The "breaking key" symptom sounds like wear on the rooftop pins and spring bores.

There are new cylinder sets with keys "out there" but not easy to find.
You can see my post in the other thread...removing the whole thing would get it to a Safe Company to see what they could do...

A lot of Ferraris have been parted out with that style lock assembly. A used cylinder should not be hard to find or expensive.
