Can anyone help. In the past few weeks I have noticed this noise on start up only, and only from cold.
Sounds similar to the 328 thread. She won't make the sound even after 6-7 hours after first start of the day.

The noise gets louder under load ie foot on the brake and lifting the clutch. If the sound was coming from the rear of the engine I would say clutch bearing.

She is due for a service now but need to go to monaco next week.

She is at a garage tonight and has been listened to tonight but everyone has different ideas about what it could be. This is not the first time I've heard 348's do this but still dont know what it is. Many thanks!!

I had a terrible rattle on my 348 on cold startup. I isolated it to the exhaust air injection check valves. Apparently some people like the sound this system makes during startup, but I doubt theirs rattled like mine did. Since this system only operates during warmup until coolant temp reaches 130degF (I believe it is), and I no longer have to get the car emissions inspected in Az, I just removed this whole system.. valves, plumbing, hoses, etc. and plugged the exhaust ports in the heads.

Might be worth checking to see if your alternator belt tensioner has backed off. That COULD account for both a rattle and a squeak, and it's not uncommon.
