Now that my herniated disk is starting to heal, I decided it was finally time to start taking out the Infamous Craigslist 308 GT4's engine out once and for all and have Bill Borum here in Oly rebuild it correctly. Although it actually runs pretty well, it smokes like a Grateful Dead concert. Basically, it is a public nuisance when running.

I've disconnected the cooling lines, the electrical connectors on top, the fuel and vapor lines to the carbs, the throttle and choke linkages. Next step is to find a big enough wrench to get the oil cooler line off the oil filter base. Then it's on to removing the headers. (My guess is that the front manifold has a small hole somewhere like the rear did!)

After that, I'll probably swing the car around in my garage and get it in the air to get better access to the tranny linkage, engine mounts and axles.

Luckily, I'm in no rush. I'm guessing the manifolds will leave my back very sore!!!

You will have to disconnect the 5-8 exh. manifold only, but don't have to remove it. Before disconnecting the shifting mechanism put your shifter iun 2nd gear and leave it there untill the engine goes back. You will have to disconnect and remove the halfshafts. This is also a good timeto repack/replace the cv joints. With the motor mounts I have loosened the big bolt in the middle of the motor mount and removed the 2 smaller (i believe 8mm) nuts and bolts. Once the engine is out it is a good idea to check these mounts and replace them if needed. To pull the engine I used a chain attached to the 5-8 bank, tilt the engine untill 5-8 is in level and then lift it out. Of course you will need an engine hoist. Good luck !

Great hints -- I have read a couple of "how-to" threads, but since I already forgot about the 2nd gear thing, I ran out and shoved it into second before I again let it slip my mind.

It'll be interesting to see how difficult this all is as I get more into it.

There are two other things I forgot to mention : 1- disconnect the oil temperature sensor and 2-disconnect the ground wire. If you do any engine work, of course cyl#1 to TDC before you do anything.

Good luck Sam. Please let me know if you need an extra pair of hands, I love projects like these!

Thanks Tori -- If I have complications, I might just call ya! Of course, my guess is that putting stuff back together is going to be harder than taking it out, so I might lure your clan down here for the refit. We can toil in the garage while our wives and kids play on the beach.
