This week im going to tackle rebuilding the starter in my f355. i have been having trouble starting her in cold weather, and its become embarrassing having someone hitting the starter with a hammer every time i want to start the car lol.

any tutorials? i found many threads relating to 'starter' and "starter rebuild' but (unless im blind and over looked it) could not find any threads on actual removal.

    any help?

Not much involved. Get the intake plumbing and right hand air cleaner box out of the way and you'll be looking right at it.

As Tim said, the only thing you'll need to get out of the way is the air filter box and the intake feed tube. Then remove the nuts holding the cables the the starter, remove the bolts holding the starter to the gearbox, and remove the starter.

Since you couldn't find a step-by-step proceedure, with pics, I think this is your opportunity to do one. Especially since you are planning on rebuilding your starter. I will help out the next guy.

Only x3 13mm bolts holding the starter into the casing. Dont forget to disconect the battery power.

    silly question.

is the battery switch in the front bonnet sufficient for cutting the power?

barring any unforeseen problems, expect a quick write up by monday. this seems easy enough.

i bought a rebuild kit on fleabay that contains new contacts and such. also think i will be installing a relay to help boost the signal from the battery to the starter.

Piece of cake, removed mine last Saturday and resurfaced the contacts - if you have new ones that's even better. Pics of the contacts are in a thread from me a few days ago. There are 3 bolts (on a 348, I assume the same on a 355) that hold the starter on. My car hits spot on every time now - I didn't add a relay. Pap is the man as he led me to the problem.

My starter started acting up almost 2 years ago. It's BAD now. Under 50 degrees, i say a little prayer to Enzo every time I turn the key. Hopefully this minor surgery tomorrow will take care of things.

    K. Just my luck. I ordered the wrong sized plunger. I replaced all the contacts, and cleaned up a bunch of tarnished copper

I'm pretty sure that I isolated the problem though. With the new plunger, the starter kicked instantly, but the starternwas free spinning. Putting the old plunger back In resulted with the starter not wanting to start.

Contacting seller, seeing if I can buy a longer plunger.

FYI he sells two kits. One with a 97mm plunger and one with a 125mm. I needed the 125. Not sure what the difference is.

Will post some pics up tomorrow. Was a straight forward job.
