I'm considering swapping out my starter for one of the modern gear reduction units. I seem to remember a post some while ago indicating it was possible to change the starter with relative ease if you removed the rear headers, but I couldn't find the post. Anyone done this? Any pointers or suggestions?

    Easy to do.
Crawl under the Dino to remove the three bolts that retain the header to the exhaust.
Open the rear trunk, remove the rear firewall to gain access to the engine area and unfasten the six nuts that secure the header to the exhaust manifold. Move it out of the way and disconnect the starter electrical and mounting bolts. Install in reverse order. There is a heat shield in there too.

At Bella Italia, OMGjon said it was the single most important improvement that he made. Now that he's had it a while, perhaps he still feels that way?

have a look at my posts on engine removal. There is a knack in getting the starter in and out past the diff. there are some photos trying to describe te process.

I would be interested in how you get on. My starter often causes me issues, even though I have stripped it down and cleaned it several times, and replaced the solenoid. Superformance also do a modified replacemet that looks like the original.

Many thanks, guys. Sounds like the perfect off-season project. I'm going to order one up and have a go at it.

I bought 3 of em!! I have one in my '74 which was easy to get in and you can get it out without removing the rear headers! It works great & spins fast & catches quickly. If you are having starting issues also consider replacing the ignition switch. You can get the ignition switch from Bavarian Auto (about $100 bucks or they used to be ). I have one in my 71 coupe which wont be done for 100 years & I sent one to Jim Selevan but I dont know if he installed it yet. They are great.. Gustafson Machine in Ma. makes em...work perfectly

This sounds intriguing that it can be simple to replce. Fogetting the councors aspect, are there any negaitives to these types of starters? Does anyone have "HOW TO" photo's?
