What is the best way to restart after oil + oilfilter replacement? Just wondering because the new oilfilter is empty, oil galleries also. It takes time to refill the system, so the bearings will take a hit. 1. Just start, no throttle. 2. Plugs out (no compression) and crank to oil pressure. 3. Plugs in and crank to oil pressure without ignition. Thanks.
I just retighten the oil plugs, tighten my filter, put oil in and start it (no throttle). How will cranking it without ignition be any better than running the car? You still have parts moving with low oil pressure? As long as there is oil film on the metal parts, you have lubrication. You're also going to have some residual in the scavenge pumps however small that won't drain completely.
Don't over think it. If the engine was run recently, the bearings are already wet with oil. It won't take but a few seconds to build pressure. Just turn the key, check for leaks, when it reaches operating temperature adjust the oil level (not too high). You're done.
This is the most dangerous moment in a Ferrari's life and you must be very careful. After refilling with oil I gently rock the car in gear back and forth for about an hour to get the oil splashed around a bit. Then put a socket on the crank and turn as fast as you can. Keep this up for about an hour and you may get oil pressure. This is good. Then remove the fuse from the fuel pump and crank for a second or two. Do that for an hour or so and then you can safely start the Ferrari. Please keep an eye on the pressure gauge.......if it takes more than 5 seconds to see pressure shut the car off and repeat.
I like Glassman's approach but you could also add an Accusump to pressurize the oil before start up if you are truly worried.
Blowing into the dipstick tube also helps to pressurize the oil. Doing it while starting takes lots of practice. So I have heard.
Done that. Pfff... three hours later: Start. After five seconds: no pressure. Tomorrow again. I'm exhausted. My god, how are you guys hanging on driving your Ferraris..They will kill you.
My thought was; without ignition you don't have the powerstroke down. With the compressionstroke there still remains a certain load.
Done that too. What happened? One of the sparkplugs came shooting out. Not tight enough. Cought my eye. Docter asked: "What happened?" Told the story. She said:" Ferrari ?? " Next weekend we have a date !!
This. Repeat procedure 8 times and then order a coffin; then 4 more times. ' ' ' ' ' ...or turn the key to "start" and return to "on" when started.
Moderators....please move this post to the thread titled "How many women have you picked up because of your Ferrari?" That's a good one Manti
Just on a serious note you shouldnt crank engines over with no ignition unless the fuel is cut as well. It dumps fuel in your exhaust system and can damage your cats/is a fire risk :-(
At least we had some fun. Next weekend I will start the thing using my remaining healthy left hand turning the ignitionkey while keeping a close one-eye look on the oil pressure gauge.
Oil pressure is not lubricating your motor an oil film is. The oil film remains and is sufficient when you start it after an oil change. Like said before, don't over think this.
Henk, These are great! You are a good sport. All kidding aside, just start it and let it idle until you have full pressure. there is no problem with that technique. Don't forget, every time you park the 360's, the oil filter empties out.
In a show of respect to the OP I was changing the oil in an old Toyota truck I had one day. After filling with oil I started the truck and waited for the oil pressure to build. I waited and I waited and I waited........at that point I realized I had the oil pan drain plug still in my right hand. Well I was pretty scared but went on to putting a huge amount of more miles on that truck.
