Not sure if this one has been covered - at least I couldn't find it in the archives so here goes. Firstly I have a clicking starter condition which I understand to be the solenoid going out. OK, I can replace that. But also something far more mysterious.Occasionally when the engine spins over it won't actually fire till I switch it off. So at the point of killing the ignition it goes VROOOM and promptly dies. The battery's good, the motor spins briskly, the earth strap is connected - its plainly some gremlin somewhere in the ignition but what? It seems to be a restart condition only. Especially likes to do it at filling stations,or when people are watching.

Probably related to the solenoid. There should be a separate wire that comes off the soleniod to power the ignition while cranking. If the soleniod is going bad, it may not be supplying enough power to the ignition.

First thing is to verify that you have a good battery and battery connections. All the conditions you described could be caused by that.

Good call. Do be sure all the connections are clean and tight. Check the ground cable where it connects to the car also.

Thanks for the advice. Is the solenoid removed in - situ or do you have to take the starter out as well? An idiots guide to removing the solenoid would be appreciated. I understand mine has a heatshield.

    Regards
