    Hello "F"-Chatters,

Question: Any one have any tips for a start-up proceedure for an engine that hasn't been ran in about five mos? I've been out of town.

Other than the obvious: Not gunning the engione and letting warn-up well before take-off, anyone have any other tips?

    Thanks, Chris.

Pull the sparkplugs, squirt about 0.5cc of motor oil in each cylinder. I use a length of 1/4" clear plastic tubing - one end goes in the sparkplug hole, squirt oil in the other end, about 3" worth, then blow compressed air throught the tube. It sprays it all over the inside of the cylinder.

Then, with the coils disconnected, crank the engine over for about 30 seconds. Replace the plugs and coil wires, and start her up. You'll get a little blue smoke as the extra oil burns out of the cylinders.

Warm her up according to the manual, and off you go.

Just wondered, does making the engine burn the extra oil put into the cylinder do any harm to the CAT, as high oil content gasses will be going through the CAT (eg does it coat it or anything). May be a dumb question, but got me thinking.

It shouldn't hurt the cats. Just give it a good warmup drive. They'll burn it off as soon as they're up to temp.

There's always a small amount of oil being sucked past the valve seals, piston rings, etc.

    Just don't overdo the oil.

After just a few months I'm not sure I'd bother with the oil, I'd pull the plugs, & the ignition fuse & crank it over until the oil pressure comes up. Re-install the plugs, let it idle until the oil pressure's been up for a minuite or so, then drive it away.

If setting for more like a year or more, then definitely would want some oil sprayed into the cylinders before spinning it over.

It's your car, spraying a little oil now won't hurt, might help prevent a little startup wear. If it were at a shop & a customer's car, I'd expect them to add a bit of oil.
