State Police Nab Driver Going 124 MPH

    Jan 18, 2006 10:10 am US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) (BEDFORD, N.Y.) If they handed out trophies for land-speed records on Interstate 684 in northern Westchester, state police say
John Garland, 21, of Somers would get one. Police say Garland was clocked at 124 mph early Tuesday morning by a trooper with radar.

When his Nissan sports car was pulled over, police say Garland had a blood alcohol content of point-19, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Sergeant Joseph Lutz says Garland will answer charges of speeding and D-W-I in Bedford Town Court this evening.

I never understood why people ran 684. It is a known speed trap, and frankly, I never liked the condition of the road bed in those areas where the 'heave' gaps separated. Granted, this guy was drinking, so he probably wasn't thinking straight.

Any of you NYers know the law regarding DWI? I remember reading a year or so ago about proposed legislature in NY allowing the state to take possession of your car in cases like this, which struck me as ludicrous, but you never know...

I think it's that you lock 'em up and throw away the key. Or at least it should be.

I believe that law was in effect but it has since been changed. A few people that got thier cars taken away sued and got them back, if i heard right so the city had to stop becuae everyone was suing and winning. I rememeber the first car taken into posseion was a 911 or something. If anyone knows for sure let us know, this is what i heard but i don't rememeber the source so i could be wrong.

I also though it could be siezed for other offenses like reckless driving if you already had one offense. Does anyone remember that? Of course that pales in comparison to the ultimate penalty which easily could have happened in this case.

I hope you feel the same "NON" sympathy for the idiots that think it's cool to film themselves racing around at high speeds, on New York City roads, putting other people's families at risk. Please spare the crap about "we are watching out for each other, and we are good drivers, just having fun.

That part i never heard before but I doubt that's true. They were talking about seizing cars if you were trying to pickup a hooker. That part I really don't get, one thing has nothing to do with the other.

(not directed at you)I think the issue should be with the guys speeding, not just the ones filming. Its just as dangerous to speed without a camera...think about it, less weight in the car makes you faster and more dangerous.

I see there as 3 groups.
The guys that speed, and enjoy driving fast and admit to it.
The guys who drive the speed limit and dont like speeders. (rare, and usually driving a van or hybrid (typically not visiting fchat))
The guys that speed, but they act like they dont and they are against it.

Save your breath. They've been cautioned already. Just like most of us they'll have to learn from experience. I just hope they don't hurt anyone but then they are such great drivers it probably won't happen.

I used to debate for years back in highschool and college and the one thing I learned is the name calling doesn't start until someone runs out of intelligent rebuttals.

You are right, anyone who disagrees with you is wrong, thanks for playing.
    Good day sir.

Sounds about right. Though I sometimes admit it, sometimes don't. But when I do, just don't film me ;)

I think George Carlin put it best (as he often does).
Anyone going faster than MY speed is a maniac and anyone slower that MY speed is an idiot.

Well, that's why I cast the stone. And, if I remember correctly, it was these same magnanimous individuals who were fawning over their event for Ronald McDonald House Charities. How would you feel if YOU were the ones who, through your asinine attitude and behavior, put some kid in a wheelchair ? Everyone has gone over the speed limit; but racing around in a pack (as I've seen in the video) just shows how childish you must be. You can't even man up and say it's wrong. That shows how immature you are.

Kind of ironic how the cops make it near impossible to speed on 684 (a road that is mostly a safe place to do it) and in the process, drive those who want to speed to do it on roads that are less safe.

Regarding 124 mph in a Nissan sports car; the lucky guy probably had a blood alchohol of .25 when he nailed the throttle and by they time it got to 124, it had dropped to .19.
