Has anybody else had a horrid experience with statins? I starting taking one about a year ago because my cholesterol was on the borderline. I ended up with crazy muscle pain after workouts. Some nights I was having to pee 5 times a night which I figured out was cooking my kidneys. Insomnia. Just about everything on the possible side effects I had. I stopped taking them 2 months ago and I feel like a new person. I'm trying a tighter diet to control cholesterol. We'll see how the tests come back.

IIRC, Lipitor is one of the top 5 prescribed drugs. Am I the only one that has been through this?

I swear this is the majority of all responses I hear. Person goes on pills, feels like crap, says screw pill and feels like new.

The entire pharmaceutical field is so crooked right now.

I take Lipitor--it has done amazing things for my lipids (I have hereditary high triglycerides, plus not the best diet in the world). My doc doubled my dose (she is militant about having the lowest lipid numbers possible). I started to get a little muscle soreness (which is a well known, and potential serious, side effect). I started on the supplement CoQ-10--worked wonders.

FWIW, even the NIH (National Institute of Health) websites notes that CoQ-10 (coenzyme Q-10) may be helpful for statin induced muscle soreness. It is rare for any supplement to receive scientific endorsement.

Also, the data about helping with potential diabetes (which runs in my family) and increased survivability of heart attacks is compelling. What makes me maybe feel a little better about being on it is a know many docs with basically OK lipid profiles that take Lipitor anyway. I wouldn't go that far if I didn't need it for other reasons, but it is an interesting endorsement.

I am on Zocor which is a similar statin. I have heard of people have reactions to statin drugs. It's usually tied to muscle/joint soreness. I've been relatively reaction free on the statin I am taking so probably a good thing. I take it because of very high triglycerides.

I've been on Caduet the past couple of years which is a combination of Lipitor and Norvasc for blook pressure. I don't have the muscle pains, but I have absolutely no energy and am suffering severe Vertigo. The doc isn't sure if the Vertigo is a side effect of the meds though. The lack of energy bugs the hell out of me though.

I was fine for about 9 months and then the side effects took hold. One of the other side effects was leg cramps at nights. So bad I could barely stand it. My leg would be sore for 2 days afterwards.

I like statins they seem to be a relatively harmless drug, but some people do experience muscle pains. The thing to do is look to your diet. Talk with your doctor about it and ask what foods he recommends eating while on statin drugs. Statins deplete CoQ10 I know that for sure. I believe that you can replace whatever the drug takes from your body with nutrition.

    Hope this helps!
