Hey guys, I'll be up in New York next week with the girlfriend and was planning on eating out for my birthday dinner. Given the copious amounts of seafood we have here in New Orleans I wanted to try out a steakhouse. BLT Prime? Old Homestead? Luger's? Haven't been to any of these places but I keep hearing about them. What say you and what specific dishes would you order? Thanks and can't wait to be back up in the Big Apple!
Best steakhouses in city I've found are Mark Joseph in downtown manhattan by seaport and Dylan Prime in tribeca. Mark Joseph is a bit more of a traditional steakhouse and Dylan Prime is a bit more upscale. You really cant go wrong with either one. Both are 10x better than lugar, blt, or old homestead if you ask me.
Not sure if you've been referred here yet, but I would go many places before Angelo & Maxie's (~18th & Park). My recs would be Smith & Wollensky or Sparks. Been a while since both so YMMV. BTW John, your signature....you're missing the best part! "You got a receipt? In Philadelphia it's worth fif-ty bucks." --pawn shop clerk
Forget the steakhouses and go to Il Mulino which is downtown. The best Italian restaurant in NYC. You can buy a great piece of meat anytime and toss it on the grill. Make your birthday memorable.
I'm a fan of Rothmann's. I love the pepper crusted filet mignon with blue cheese custard. http://www.rothmanns54.com/home.html
I've actually been to Il Mulino once for a quick drink with my father and a friend. Judging by the size of the place I doubt I'd be able to get in on the 11th of this month! Also, how does the menu work there? A la carte? Prix fixe? $100/person? $300? (sans alcohol)
Hmmm, a quick look at their menu and I am drawn to this: Dylan Beef Wellington Grilled Portobello Mushroom & Foie Gras Sauce Sounds great! Either that or their carpetbagger steak...mmmmm
Seriously speaking I've been to them ALL MANY, MANY TIMES. In my opinion Christos steakhouse in Astoria of all places is just fantastic.
None from any of the usual places. The sirloin burgers tend to always be much more flavorful. If you were going to consider anything other then a steakhouse for your bday I'd also check out Per Se. Slightly more expensive but amazing meal and experience.
Ah yes, I have looked into Per Se after eating at the French Laundry about 2 years ago. It is definitely on my "To-Do" list despite an underwhelming meal at FL. I figure it was more of a fluke given the reputation so I am eager to see the NYC version of things
Harry, Only going to be in Manhatten on this trip. Any Manhatten places you like? Any elaboration appreciated!
Lunch menu was both prix fixe and a la carte; not dinner. Good meal in NYC is going to cost you, but you want it to be memorable, especially when it's a celebration. When I was traveling extensively on business years ago, I would go to steak places because it was safe - can't screw up a good piece of beef - when in a smallish city/town. But when I went to great restaraunt town I went for other cuisine, because it was going to be exquisite. NYC has fabulous restaurants, so why not take advantage of trying a great one. Regardless of where you go have a Happy B'day.
Was at Sparks last week. Steak was good (went with 8 hungry guys) but that Italian place sounds pretty good too.
I'm fond of bobby vans and delmonicos downtown. Very old school wallstreet feel and great steaks. For a more modern upscale place, check out Porterhouse in columbus circle.
Youse guys are making me hungry. I've gotta stop by "Tads Steakhouse" on the way home for one of their NY Strips ...;-)
