My series II/III trunk lid is steel and won't stay up. Others have posted that the series I trunk lid is aluminum. I wonder about the trunk lid on other Series II/III cars. I have a line on a series I trunk lid but certainly don't want to change if steel is the original material for my car.

It appears that most, but I'm not sure ALL, series 1 cars had aluminum lids on all 3.
To be honest I'm not sure if all series 2 cars were steel. I believe so since that would help explain part of the difference in weight between series 1 and series 2/3 cars. But again, I don't know 100%.

Pretty vague answer, but I don't want to give you false info.

The only non-magnetic panel on my car is the engine cover.

I swear these cars get more and more interesting all the time.

So it looks like you could have any of the following:

    1) All 3 lids aluminum
    2) All 3 lids steel
    3) Some combo of both.

and we're supposed to keep track of this how?
    What a riot.

This is all very interesting. I wonder if the lid-stay is any different on your car with the steel engine lid?

I would think that the same mechanism that holds up an aluminum trunk would not be strong enough to hold up the steel trunk and that seems to be the case with my car. To re-weld the broken pin would involve removing and re-painting the trunk (and probably removing the carpets so they don't burn.) With all that work, an aluminum replacement seems like it might be the way to go.

On the other hand, it may be naive to think than a new repo. or used aluminum trunk lid will just bolt on and fit correctly. I suspect it will take a lot of work to get it to fit just right.

A little research in the parts manual shows only number 40364408 as the "Cofano baule" rear lid, but it shows three numbers (40016701, 60555300, and 40178907) for the "Cofano motore." Though, I suspect the different motor lids numbers relate to different mounting of the different rainguards under the slats rather than aluminum vs steel.

What year parts manual? I wonder if there is a different part number in the '75 book versus the '78 book.
I'll check later if you don't have both.

    Yep I found it......

The old part number is 40017402.
    So there is a change.
Steel? Alum? Cardboard? Maybe all 3?

And yet a THIRD part number!
The 1974 parts book shows it as a 0400174.

The front and rear lids attract the magnet on mine but only the outer edge of the engine lid does the center of it does not! I'm sure this clears everything up! :D Though the trunk does attract the magnet it seems quite light in weight.

    Cheers!

"clears everything...." <laughing> The history and differences on these cars is such a riot.

It attracts a magnet on the edge because the "frame" is steel.

My S2 car has aluminum panels on the front and engine covers, steel on the rear trunk. BTW, the sunroof panel is steel too.

I tried to get a better photo of the trunk support post but my camera refuses to focus in the cold. The support is just a 6mm dia. rod welded to the trunk frame, just a simple bead around the end of the rod. A good TIG weld and some heat barrier around the weld site would probably save the exteror paint. What do you think Peter?
Another posibility is to weld a washer on the end of the pin and the use about 3 rivets to fasten the washer/pin the the trunk frame. If the washer is the same size as the rubber snubber the rivets won't be visable.

I don't think that the weight difference, steel vs alum, would cause a properly operating support to not work. The lid is nearly upright in the open position so the hinges take most of the weight anyway.

Hey Dave, its a Ferrari, not a Yugo. The aluminum might be from an old road sign but it won't be cardboard :)

My Euro 308GT4 has all 3 lids as AL with steel frames. SN is 11966, build date is Jan 20, 1976. The car is part S1, part S2.

Perhaps this is so. On mine, with the pin broken off, it sags enough so the weight is all on the spring and then it falls down.

Looking more like the steel was original on my car and I just need to re-weld the little pin.

Has anyone else seen a trunk stay like this on a GT4? This is from a 1979 car that is on e-bay. I am going to seriously consider rigging something up like this.
