Hi All, I'm really struggling to identify a noise in the steering column, it comes and goes and is sometimes louder under load then can totally disappear only to come back again 10 mins later. It sounds a bit like metal rubbing but I think it may be a hydraulic noise. It doesn't have any effect on the steering but it's really doing my head in! Any ideas??? Thanks Andrew
Guys, seems I'm on my own with this one? I'll have to let the money makers at Italian Motors go mad with my credit card.
I get what I describe as a crinkly noise. Under load and usually at higher speeds. I would be curious if you find anything out. I can't reproduce it every time so difficult to diagnose. Mine is a 05 SA.
Hi Bruce, it's a 2004 RHD 575 HGTC. Tmario, it does sound a little like we have a similar issue. I have had the column lubricated but it didn't work, I think there may be an issue with the hydraulics but to be honest I'm guessing. It does seem to subside after about half an hour of driving then come back at intervals. Cheers, Andrew
On other V12 cars, a sound similar to what you are describing has actually proven to be the plastic covers on top of the column rubbing together as the column flexes under load. Easy to check and costs nothing to fix.
I had a funny noise in my steering then I upgraded to the FHP steering computer and the noise went away, I can't explain it, it was only at low speed coming out of the garage but I upgraded about 6 months ago and no noise!
