Hi all I have a problem with my 82 QV. The steering wheel is shaking/rattling when I reach speeds of 60-70 mph. The "phenomenon" is on and of, and tend to reinforce/go away as I go through turns. It is acctually quite predictable. Sometimes the steering is OK, but if I go inot a turn the shaking gradually comes. If there is a opposite turn just afterwards, the shaking dissapears in the same pattern. I suspect this is due to some "flat spots" on the tires, and that the shaking occurs as a result of the "flat spots" relative position to the ground. I took the tires of to check and I can see flat spots on them. I plan to change the tires too find out but just want to hear if any of you guys have experienced something similar, or to criticise my theory. The car has new steering, new suspension and relatively sound bushings. It is a dream to drive exept from this shaking. If flat spots turns out to be the reason I promise to use the car frequently enough to never make this happen again... Also: Any suggestion to tires? Pirreili Pzero? Michelin Pilot?
I am not a good mechanic and have not checked them myself, but according to my mechanic they are ok. And this is a good mechanic. He did check this out this spring while he changed the suspension/springs and suspension bushings. The shaking steering was there also before this job. The car is quite a lot better to drive after the suspension upgrade, but the shaking is still there.
It sounds like the wheels/tires are out of balance or the wheels are out of round. Cheap stuff first. Nylon carcass tires will have flat spots from sitting until they are fully warmed. Have you taken it on a long drive and does the problem still exist? Wheels/tires badly out of balance will tend to create small flat spots as the out of balance condition causes heavier wear on some portions of the tire and less on those portions off the pavement from bouncing. I have taken her for several long ( up to more than 500 kms) drives and it does not disapear. It gets slightly better after some driving, but the next drive it is just as bad. This supports my belief that this is a tyre problem (tires get somewhat better when warm). As I said, there are flat spots on the tires. I tried to balance the tires again but no help.
